• Marlins' Chris Paddack: Gives up first run of spring

  Paddack allowed one run on two hits over four innings in Friday's split-squad game against the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. The right-hander gave up his first run of the spring on a CJ Abrams single in the second inning. Paddack's 0.69 ERA and 12:3 K:BB over 13 innings in camp are encouraging, but over the last five seasons he's stumbled to a 5.11 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 while averaging about 76.1 innings a year due to various injuries. Even if he can stay healthy, Paddack doesn't profile as more than an innings-eater for the Marlins while they wait for younger pitchers like Robby Snelling and Braxton Garrett to muscle their way to the majors.

• Marlins' Chris Paddack: Looking good this spring

  Paddack gave up two hits over three scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out two without walking a batter. The 30-year-old right-hander built up to 40 pitches (27 strikes) against a patchwork lineup headlined by Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes. Paddack's fastball topped out at 95.8 mph, and through six spring innings he has yet to allow a run while posting a 6:1 K:BB. Given his injury-plagued career and 5.22 ERA over 246.1 innings the last two seasons between the Twins and Tigers, however, simply taking a regular turn for the Marlins in 2026 would be an accomplishment.

• Marlins' Chris Paddack: Rotation spot secure

  Marlins manager Clayton McCullough announced Friday that Paddack will be included in Miami's starting rotation to begin the season, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The right-hander signed with the Marlins earlier this week and will be guaranteed a rotation spot despite posting a 5.35 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 112:37 K:BB across 158 regular-season innings between the Tigers and Twins last year. That workload was a career high and was the first time since Paddack's rookie year in 2019 that he topped 110 frames. He's never come close to replicating the 3.33 ERA he posted during his debut campaign, however.

• Marlins' Chris Paddack: Inks deal with Miami

  The Marlins signed Paddack to a one-year, $4 million contract Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Paddack pitched to a 4.95 ERA across 21 starts with the Twins last season before being shipped to the Tigers at the trade deadline. He pitched in 12 games for Detroit, making seven starts, and logged a miserable 6.32 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB across 47 innings. In Miami, Paddack figures to compete for the fifth spot in the rotation behind Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Max Meyer (hip) and Braxton Garrett (elbow). Robby Snelling, Janson Junk and Adam Mazur will be Paddack's top competition.

Paddack surrendered an early solo homer to Masataka Yoshida in the first inning before allowing another three runs to cross in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run shot from David Hamilton. The right-hander never retired more than four consecutive batters Sunday and the outing marked the sixth time in the second half he's allowed multiple home runs. The 29-year-old finishes the regular season on a difficult stretch, posting a 7.76 ERA with only 15 strikeouts over his last 31.1 innings across nine appearances.

• Tigers' Chris Paddack: Drawing start for Game 162

  Paddack will draw the start on the mound in Sunday's game against Boston, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Paddack will replace Tarik Skubal on the rubber in Game 162 after Detroit secured a playoff berth with a 2-1 win over the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing the team the rest their ace in the regular-season finale. Since being acquired from the Twins in July, Paddack has posted a 6.12 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB in 42.2 innings over 11 appearances. He was moved to the bullpen earlier this month but should be able to provide the Tigers with a decent amount of length after tossing five innings of long relief in his most recent appearance Sept. 19 versus Atlanta.

  Paddack tossed three perfect innings of relief in Tuesday's 12-2 win over the Yankees to earn a save. He struck out four. After spending a few days on the bereavement list due to a death in the family, Paddack made his first appearance since Sept. 2 and looked sharp working the final three innings of the game to record his first career MLB save, albeit with a big cushion after the Tigers scored nine times in the seventh. It was the veteran righty's second relief outing this year across 29 games overall, and he's expected to stick in the Detroit bullpen moving forward. Paddack has an underwhelming 5.26 ERA and 6.3 K/9 on the season that limit his fantasy appeal, particularly now that he's not in the rotation, though his stuff could play up a bit in long relief.

After Paddack had posted a 2-2 record, 5.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB in 30 innings over six starts since being acquired in a trade with the Twins on July 28, the Tigers moved him to the bullpen earlier this week. Paddack struggled mightily in his first relief appearance in Tuesday's 12-5 loss to the Mets, covering 1.1 innings while allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

Although it was also the second time this year that the 29-year-old right-hander registered zero punchouts, he at least managed to settle down after Kansas City tagged him for three runs in the first frame. Paddack has an underwhelming 5.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB over 30 innings since joining the Tigers, and his streaming appeal will be limited with a tough matchup against the Mets on tap for next week.

The right-hander celebrated being dealt to a Tigers team in the thick of the race for the best record in the AL by delivering his sixth quality start of the season on 84 pitches (58 strikes) in his debut for his new squad. Paddack has had an uneven campaign, posting a 4.77 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 88:27 K:BB through 117 innings, but simply being able to take a regular turn in the rotation has to count as a successful season -- that innings total is his highest since 2019. He'll look to build on this performance in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Twins team that just traded him away.

Paddack was able to keep a dangerous Dodgers lineup in check, but he was taken deep by the red-hot Shohei Ohtani for a solo shot in the first inning. It was an impressive bounce-back effort by Paddack, who registered his most strikeouts since his June 1 start in Seattle and threw at least six frames for the first time since a June 7 outing versus Toronto. The right-hander's shaky 4.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 83:27 K:BB over 111 innings still render him tough to trust his next time out versus the Red Sox, who have a .823 OPS against right-handed pitching over 18 games since the start of July.

  Paddack (3-7) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over 4.2 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Tigers. Paddack was decent compared to recent outings, but he still gave up some loud contact, as four of the six hits he allowed went for extra bases. The first two runs came on solo shots by Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene, and Paddack's start came to an end after Carpenter's RBI triple in the fifth. Paddack has allowed 21 runs (19 earned) over his last 18.2 innings, which simply isn't good enough. His ERA is up to 4.70 with a 1.23 WHIP and 63:24 K:BB over 90 innings across 17 starts. That's already his most innings in any seasons since 2021, so it's possible the right-hander may be struggling with a heavier workload after multiple years in a row impacted by injuries. His next start is projected to come at home versus the Rays.
