  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Not on ALCS roster

Martinez is not on the Guardians' roster for the ALCS against the Yankees, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Martinez was on the ALDS roster as an injury replacement for Tyler Freeman (oblique) but saw just one plate appearance during the series. The Guardians have elected to carry another reliever, Pedro Avila, instead.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Added to ALDS roster

The Guardians added Martinez to their ALDS roster Monday. He's an injury replacement for Tyler Freeman (oblique). Martinez slashed .232/.298/.338 with three homers and three steals over 43 games with the Guardians this season. The switch hitter should serve as a backup at several positions.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Filling in for injured Kwan

Martinez will start in left field and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Twins. For the fifth game in a row, Martinez will set the table for the Guardians after providing seven hits and two walks in 16 plate appearances over the past four contests. Martinez looks poised to handle an everyday role atop the batting order for Cleveland after Steven Kwan (back) was placed on the injured list Tuesday.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Swipes bag from leadoff spot

Martinez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Rays. Martinez was hitless in his return to the majors Saturday, but he followed it up with a better game Sunday. He's had the opportunity to fill in for Steven Kwan (body fatigue) this weekend, though Martinez could later push Will Brennan and Jhonkensy Noel for a piece of right field once Kwan is able to return to the lineup. Martinez has a .241/.318/.371 slash line with three home runs, three steals, nine RBI and 14 runs scored over 133 plate appearances in the majors this year, though his .274/.356/.456 slash line over 55 games with Triple-A Columbus displays some of his contact-oriented upside.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Promoted, leading off

Martinez was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Martinez has 125 plate appearances in the majors this season but has been with Columbus since Aug. 9. He'll immediately appear in the lineup, as he is set to lead off and play left field Saturday against the Rays with Steven Kwan (body fatigue) still sidelined. Martinez has maintained a .236 average with three home runs and two steals on the campaign.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Out of Sunday's lineup

Martinez is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Martinez will sit for Sunday's series finale after going 2-for-7 with a walk and a home run while starting in the first two contests against Baltimore. Tyler Freeman will start in center field and bat seventh in Martinez's stead.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Exiting starting nine Thursday

Martinez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles. He'll head to the bench for the first time since his July 4 call-up from Triple-A Columbus, ending a stretch of 23 straight starts in which he's slashed .230/.306/.368 with two home runs and two stolen bases. Martinez has largely served as the Guardians' primary center fielder and No. 2 hitter during that stretch, but he was dropped to fifth in the lineup in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Tigers. With Martinez having now gone 4-for-25 with seven strikeouts over his last six starts, it's possible that he could slip further down the batting order if he's unable to right the ship soon.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Two hits, stolen base in win

Martinez went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 3-1 win over the Phillies. Martinez reached on an infield single in the first inning, then stole second base and came around to score on a David Fry single. Martinez would later drive in a run of his own during the fourth frame, giving him six RBI in his first 21 career games. After not stealing a bag in his first 18 contests, he now has a steal in two of his last three games. Martinez has hit second for the Guardians in 19 straight games and is batting .254 with a .750 OPS over that stretch.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Clubs second homer

Martinez went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Rays. Martinez tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning with his second homer in the last five games. The 22-year-old prospect has filled a versatile role, but most of his playing time has been in center field, which has led to a smaller role for Tyler Freeman. Martinez is batting .256 with two homers, four RBI, six runs scored, three doubles and no stolen bases over 12 contests.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Smacks first career homer

Martinez went 1-for-6 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 9-8 extra-inning win over the Tigers. Martinez lifted a Kenta Maeda splitter in the top of the first inning for his first home run in his eighth career start. At 22 years old, Martinez became the youngest Guardians player with a home run since Francisco Lindor in April 2016. Martinez has only struck out twice over his first 35 plate appearances while drawing eight walks and showing versatile defense with a start in four different spots in the diamond.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Promoted, starting Thursday

The Guardians recalled Martinez from Triple-A Columbus, and he's starting in center field Thursday against the White Sox. The 22-year-old was up with the big club for a couple days in June and saw action in two games, going 2-for-7 at the plate. Martinez started at third base and designated hitter during that stint but will receive a look in center field Thursday while batting second.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Heads back to minors

The Guardians optioned Martinez to Triple-A Columbus on Monday. The Guardians gave Martinez a brief look while Gabriel Arias (personal) was away from the team over the weekend while on the family medical emergency list. Arias was activated ahead of Monday's series opener in Baltimore, so Martinez will go back to Triple-A to pick up more regular playing time. He's produced a .333/.438/.550 slash line at Columbus in 2024.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Set for first MLB stint

The Guardians recalled Martinez from Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Martinez will get his first taste of big-league action, stepping onto the 26-man roster due to Gabriel Arias tending to personal matters. The 22-year-old Martinez slashed .333/.438/.550 with three homers and a 12.1 percent K rate in 17 games at Columbus. He's likely to provide depth at shortstop, second base and third base while up with the Guardians.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Guardians reinstated Martinez (hand) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. Martinez was protected from the Rule 5 Draft following the 2022 season and was added to the Guardians' 40-man roster, but he's still waiting to make his MLB debut. He wasn't a serious candidate to break camp with the big club, and any outside chance he might have had to crack the Opening Day roster came to an end when he suffered a right foot contusion late in spring training. Martinez then suffered a more significant injury when he began a rehab assignment in April, as he fractured the hamate bone in his left hand during his third game with Columbus. After being shut down for the ensuing six weeks, Martinez started up a new rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League last week and is now ready to report to Columbus, where he should play on an everyday basis.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Begins rehab assignment

Martinez (hand) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Thursday in his first rehab game with the Arizona Complex League Guardians. Martinez began the season on the injured list with a right foot contusion but then suffered a fractured hamate bone six weeks ago while on a rehab assignment for the foot injury. The 22-year-old will eventually move up to a higher affiliate and is likely to be optioned to Triple-A Columbus once he's deemed ready rather than be added to the Guardians' roster.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Guardians transferred Martinez (foot) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday due to a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Martinez opened the season on the IL with what the Guardians listed as a right foot contusion, but he appears to have been diagnosed with the broken hand upon being lifted early in his third rehab game with Triple-A Columbus this past Saturday. As a result of the move to the 60-day IL, Martinez won't be eligible for activation until late May. Martinez has two minor-league options remaining and is likely to be assigned to Columbus once he completes a rehab assignment and is ready for activation.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Headed to Double-A as 20-year-old

Martinez was promoted to Double-A Akron on Saturday, Guardians Baseball Insider reports. The Guardians' farm system is stacked, particularly with middle infielders, and Martinez is one of the standouts. He hit .288/.384/.477 with 10 home runs, 10 steals and a 58:40 K:BB in 77 games at High-A and doesn't turn 21 until January.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Back from injury

Martinez (shoulder) was activated from the 7-day injured list at High-A Lake County on Wednesday. Martinez missed about two weeks of action with a left shoulder strain. He was surging prior to the injury, slashing .348/.412/.652 in his last 11 games. Overall, he's maintained a strong .276/.393/.476 slash line with eight home runs, 22 RBI, 33 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 61 contests, so it's possible the infield prospect eventually gets a look at Double-A Akron before the end of the year.

  • Indians' Angel Martinez: Showing well stateside

Martinez is hitting .261/.333/.420 with five homers, 10 steals and 28:57 BB:K across 68 games for Low-A Lynchburg. At just 19, Martinez is 2.4 years younger than the average player in the league, and he's more than holding his own against older competition. This is the Dominican infielder's first season stateside, and he's making a positive impression, racing up Cleveland's prospect ranks thanks to his well-rounded skill set. Of course, he's still several years from the majors, but managers in dynasty formats will want to file his name away.
