It feels like Jack Kochanowicz arrived in the major leagues about 40 years too late. Back in the 80s, a big, sturdy right-hander with good control, heavy ground ball tendencies and virtually zero swing and miss ability probably would have had a long career. In the modern game, his place is less certain, even after he managed to post a solid 3.99 ERA in 11 starts for the Angels in 2024 in spite of a microscopic 9.4 percent strikeout rate. Kochanowicz will be part of the rotation competition for the Angels in 2025 and might very well begin the season in the big leagues, but his profile gives him a very narrow path to fantasy viability.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Nabs final spot in rotation

Angels manager Ron Washington said Monday that Kochanowicz will open the season as the team's fifth starter, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. He beat out Reid Detmers, who will begin the season in the bullpen. Kochanowicz earned the spot after holding a 2.92 ERA and 7:4 K:BB over 12.1 innings covering four Cactus League starts. The 6-foot-7 righty had just a 9.4 percent strikeout rate in 11 starts with the Angels last season, but the club will bet on the sinkerballer producing enough grounders to make up for his lack of bat-missing ability.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Impressive in bid for starting role

Kochanowicz tossed four perfect innings with two strikeouts in a Cactus League start against Cincinnati on Sunday. Kochanowicz was ultra efficient in the outing, needing just 44 pitches to get through four frames. In fact, the righty was so efficient that he threw more pitches in the bullpen following his departure from the game. Kochanowicz is competing with Reid Detmers for the Angels' fifth-starter role this spring. While Detmers has been fine with a 3.52 ERA and 4:2 K:BB over 7.2 innings, Kochanowicz has been better, giving up just one earned run and posting a 6:1 K:BB across nine frames.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Solid in spring start Tuesday

Kochanowicz pitched three scoreless innings in a Cactus League contest against Cleveland on Tuesday, allowing three hits and striking out one batter. Kochanowicz was scratched from his previous start due to an illness, but he looked no worse for wear in his return to the mound. The 24-year-old righty has given up just one earned run while posting a 4:1 K:BB over five innings this spring. Kochanowicz and Reid Detmers are the leading candidates for the Angels' fifth-starter role, with how each pitcher performs in exhibition play likely to determine who gets the job.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Sim game on tap

Kochanowicz (illness) will throw a simulated game Friday and is expected to start Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Guardians, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The right-hander was unable to start as scheduled Thursday due to an illness, but his return to the mound a day later indicates there's no cause for concern. Kochanowicz posted a 3.99 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB across 65.1 innings as a rookie last year and is competing in spring training for the No. 5 spot in the Halos' rotation.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Misses start due to illness

Kochanowicz was unable to start Thursday's Cactus League game against the Cubs as planned due to an illness, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Kochanowicz has been sick this week, and while the Angels were holding out hope he could be ready to take the ball Thursday, he's not up to it yet. Caden Dana will draw the start for the Halos instead. Kochanowicz has already made one start this spring and should be ready to pitch again in a few days. He's competing for the final spot in the Angels rotation.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Has so-so opening audition

Kochanowicz allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over two innings in a Cactus League start against Seattle on Saturday. Kochanowicz is vying for the Angels' fifth-starter opening, so each of his outings this spring could have an impact on his role to begin the regular season. The right-hander began his spring debut Saturday with a 1-2-3 frame but then struggled in the second inning, allowing a pair of singles and a walk to yield two runs before striking out the final two batters he faced. Reid Detmers, who may be Kochanowicz's top competition for a rotation spot, is slated to pitch for the Angels against Cleveland on Sunday.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Loses despite quality start

Kochanowicz (2-6) yielded three runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against Texas. Kochanowicz gave up just one run through six frames before the Rangers tallied a pair in the seventh inning. He closed his season with three straight seven-inning performances, earning a quality start in each. Kochanowicz posted a solid 3.99 ERA through 65.1 innings as a rookie, but his 25:10 K:BB didn't provide much fantasy upside. He posted a 2.77 ERA over his last nine starts of the year.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Let down by bullpen Tuesday

Kochanowicz came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox, allowing three hits over seven scoreless innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. The rookie right-hander was impressive, albeit against a historically inept foe, as he delivered his seventh quality start in eight trips to the mound since he joined the rotation for good in August. The Angels' bullpen melted down in the eighth inning though, denying him his first win in September. Kochanowicz has a 2.63 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 51.1 innings over that eight-start stretch despite a 19:6 K:BB that limits his ceiling in many fantasy formats. He lines up to make one more start in 2024, at home Sunday against the Rangers.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Delivers quality start Wednesday

Kochanowicz came away with a no-decision Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings in a 4-3 extra-innings win over the White Sox. He struck out five without walking a batter. The rookie right-hander produced his sixth quality start in his last seven trips to the mound as he solidifies a spot in the Angels' rotation plans for 2025. Over that stretch, Kochanowicz has posted a 3.05 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 44.1 innings despite a subpar 15:6 K:BB. In fact, Wednesday's five strikeouts were a new career high for the 23-year-old. Kochanowicz lines up to make his next start on the road next week in a rematch with the White Sox.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Saddled with fifth loss

Kochanowicz (2-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Twins. A three-run fourth inning was enough to send Kochanowicz to his second straight loss. He had posted five straight quality starts before Wednesday's outing fell short of that threshold. The rookie right-hander is now at a 5.08 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB through 44.1 innings over eight starts. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the White Sox in his next outing.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Little run support in loss

Kochanowicz (1-3) took the loss Sunday against Atlanta, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings. He did not strike out a batter. Kochanowicz nearly escaped the first inning clean, but Atlanta was able to scratch a run across. They tacked on a second when Ramon Laureano took him deep to open up the fourth to make it a 2-0 game. He's given the Angels some excellent length in his two recent starts, though he did post a 2:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings, so there hasn't been much swing-and-miss with his pitches. He's also given up a home run in all four of his starts thus far. The 23-year-old owns a 6.53 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB in 20.2 innings. He lines up for a road start against the Blue Jays his next time taking the mound.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Back in big leagues

The Angels recalled Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City on Saturday. Kochanowicz was recalled from Double-A on Wednesday before being optioned back two days later without making an appearance. He'll now rejoin the Angels and will most likely be used as a long relief option out of the bullpen. Jose Marte (illness) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Serving as 27th man

The Angels recalled Kochanowicz from Double-A Rocket City on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Kochanowicz will serve as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving the Angels an option for long relief. The big right-hander has been walloped for 12 runs (11 earned) over seven innings in his two starts with the big club this season.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Sent back to minors

The Angels optioned Kochanowicz to Double-A Rocket City on Monday. Kochanowicz's first stint in the big leagues wasn't promising, as he was torched for 12 runs (11 earned) over seven innings in his two starts. The big right-hander will return to Rocket City, with whom he's turned in a 4.55 ERA and 79:23 K:BB over 91 innings in 2024.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Hit hard in debut

Kochanowicz (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings while striking out one. The 23-year-old got rocked right out of the gate in his major-league debut, allowing four consecutive hits to open the contest while also hitting Luke Raley with a pitch. Kochanowicz would allow four runs in the frame, though only three would be charged to him on account of a fielding error by Luis Guillorme. Kochanowicz then surrendered a leadoff homer to Cal Raleigh in the third, though the right-hander would at least make it through the inning before being relieved by Kenny Rosenberg to begin the fourth. It was an ugly first start for Kochanowicz, and there's no guarantee the rookie will remain in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Added to 40-man roster

The Angels selected Kochanowicz's contract from Double-A Rocket City on Monday. Kochanowicz is now on the 40-man roster and protected from the Rule 5 Draft. The tall right-hander hasn't done much in the minors to this point, holding a 5.27 ERA and 69:25 K:BB over 94 innings between High-A Tri-City and Rocket City in 2023. He'll probably head back to Rocket City to begin 2024.

  • Angels' Jack Kochanowicz: Out with undisclosed injury

Kochanowicz is out with an unspecified injury, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports. The No. 92 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Kochanowicz has only been able to pitch in one season as a pro, logging a 6.91 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 83.1 innings at Single-A last year. He has missed significant developmental reps, and it's unclear when he will return to game action.
