Player Outlook
Joe Mack could be an above-average or better defensive catcher while hitting for above-average power, and he should spend the majority of 2026 in the majors. A rare success story among highly-drafted prep catchers -- the Marlins selected Mack with the No. 31 overall pick in 2021 -- Mack broke out as a power hitter at Double-A in 2024 and carried that success over at Triple-A in 2025. A lefty hitter who turns 23 this offseason, Mack slashed .250/.320/.459 with 18 home runs, eight steals, an 8.5 percent walk rate and a 27.9 percent strikeout rate in 99 games at Triple-A. Mack's success at the plate comes from his lift-and-pull approach, as he has steadily logged pull rates over 50 percent and groundball rates under 43 percent over the past two years, and his groundball rate was a career-best 36.6 percent last year. Mack is an aggressive hitter who is unlikely to hit for a decent batting average early in his big-league career, but he should provide enough value on defense and in the power department to play four or five days per week once he's up. Agustin Ramirez should continue to play regularly while getting most of his starts at designated hitter. Mack attempted one steal from 2021-2023 and attempted three steals in 2024 before attempting 12 steals in 2025. He has never been graded as an average runner, but he seems to have added opportunistic base stealing to his game.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Optioned to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Mack to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday. The 23-year-old is one of Miami's top prospects, but he struggled to a .472 OPS across nine spring games and will open the campaign at Triple-A. Mack spent most of 2025 with Jacksonville and totaled 18 home runs and seven steals with a .786 OPS in 98 contests.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Back in action Tuesday

Mack (neck) is starting at catcher and batting cleanup in Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Nationals. Mack was unavailable for a bit due to neck stiffness, but he's been cleared to return to action. The 23-year-old is 3-for-18 with one home run and a 2:6 BB:K this spring and is projected to open the season at Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Day-to-day with stiff neck

Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Monday that Mack is dealing with a stiff neck but should return to the Grapefruit League lineup in a couple days, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. McCullough noted that if it were the regular season, Mack would most likely play through the injury. Mack has appeared in seven games this spring for Miami, going 3-for-18 with one home run at the dish. He's third on the Marlins' catching depth chart and will begin the season at Triple-A Jacksonville, barring an injury to Agustin Ramirez or Liam Hicks.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Making case for Opening Day roster

Mack went 1-for-3 with a grand slam in the Marlins' Grapefruit League game against the Phillies on Tuesday. The fifth-inning blast came off minor-league pitcher Andrew Walling, but it was still a statement of intent from Mack that he's not interested in heading back to Triple-A Jacksonville to begin the season. The top catching prospect slashed .252/.323/.463 in 98 games last year with the Jumbo Shrimp, slugging 18 homers, and his defense looks ready for the majors already, although he was charged with a throwing error on a pickoff attempt Tuesday. Mack's biggest hurdle to a spot on the 26-man roster is the fact that Agustin Ramirez and Liam Hicks are ahead of him on the depth chart, but Ramirez still has a lot of work to do on defense to prove he's capable of sticking behind the plate long term. A rough start to 2026 with the glove for the 24-year-old could open the door for Mack to make his MLB debut early in the season.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Having huge finish to year

Mack went 1-for-4 with a walk, a two-run home run and a second run scored for Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. The 22-year-old backstop walked it off for the Jumbo Shrimp in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving Mack his 20th homer of the year between Double-A and Triple-A. He's gone yard in four straight games, and over his last 12 contests for Jacksonville he's slashing .325/.383/.950 with 10 of his 13 hits (two doubles, a triple and seven homers) going for extra bases. The presence of Agustin Ramirez ahead of him on the organizational depth chart complicates his timeline, but Mack appears ready to make his big-league debut in 2026, and he could be competing for a 26-man roster spot in spring training.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Waking up at Triple-A

Mack went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, two additional runs scored and a stolen base Friday for Triple-A Jacksonville. His contributions didn't end with his bat -- the catcher also guided four Jumbo Shrimp pitchers to a combined no-hitter and 14 strikeouts over nine innings. Mack appears to be finding his groove again after a month-long slump from late May into June that saw him slash .133/.216/.173 with a 29.5 percent strikeout rate in 88 plate appearances. Over his last four games, he's gone 9-for-18 with a double and two homers. With Agustin Ramirez leading a trio of backstops on the big-league roster, the Marlins have the luxury of not rushing Mack to the majors, but he could be ready to contribute in Miami later on this season.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Overcomes hamstring strain

Mack (hamstring) has gone 3-for-15 with 10 walks, two RBI and two runs in six games since being reinstated from Single-A Jupiter's 7-day injured list July 22. Mack was on the shelf for nearly two months due to the hamstring strain before returning to action for the Marlins' Single-A affiliate. The 19-year-old catching prospect has shown a hyper-patient approach at the plate since being activated, and his combination of high on-base percentages and burgeoning pop could make him an interesting fantasy option down the road, especially if he's able to stick behind the plate.

  • Marlins' Joe Mack: Dealing with hamstring strain

Mack is dealing with a hamstring strain and is expected to miss approximately 4-6 weeks, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reports. Mack has appeared in just four games this year while battling a hamstring issue, and he'll focus on his rehab process after being diagnosed with a strain. The 19-year-old will presumably attempt to return to game action sometime in late July or early August.
