• Guardians' Logan Allen: Fans four in second spring start

  Allen allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over 2.2 innings in Thursday's spring start against the White Sox. Allen made his second Cactus League start and worked up to 44 pitches (26 strikes). Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt was pleased with the outing but noted the pitcher's "command issues" following the game, per Steve Stockmar of MLB.com. Higher-than optimal walk rates were an issue for Allen last season, and he also saw a spike in home runs allowed. After teasing the Guardians in his rookie 2023 season (3.81 ERA), Allen fell off to a 5.73 ERA and allowed a combined 34 home runs in 146 innings between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus. The left-hander is one of several pitchers competing for a spot in the big-league rotation.

  The Guardians recalled Allen from Triple-A Columbus on Monday. Allen will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Royals. The lefty could be in line for just a spot start, as Alex Cobb (fingernail) looks to have a good shot and returning from the 15-day injured list the next time the Guardians require a fifth starter. Allen holds a 5.56 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 78:37 K:BB across 92.1 innings with the big club this season.

With Allen heading back to the minors, it would seem the Guardians feel good about Tanner Bibee's (shoulder) chances of being ready to make a start later this week.

  Allen did not factor into the decision in Monday's 7-6 loss versus the Diamondbacks. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings. Allen was recalled to make his first start since July 6 after struggling to a 5.67 ERA in his first 18 starts, barely making it out of the first inning Monday. He gave up back-to-back home runs to the first two hitters he faced and then loaded the bases before barely escaping the opening frame. Allen went on to get through the next four innings unscathed. It's unclear if Allen will get another turn in the rotation, as Alex Cobb (hip) will return this weekend and Triston McKenzie may also get another look after having his best start in the minors his last time out.

  The Guardians recalled Allen from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Diamondbacks. Tanner Bibee still needs more time off to move past a shoulder injury, so the Guardians will bring back Allen to make his first start for the big club since July 6. After a solid rookie campaign in 2023, Allen turned in a 5.67 ERA over 18 starts this season before the Guardians sent the struggling lefty to the minors. Though he's rebounded over his three starts at Triple-A with a 3.86 ERA, Allen has given up three long balls while turning in an underwhelming 12:7 K:BB in 16.1 innings. Since Allen doesn't seem to have completely righted the ship during his time in the minors, he's tough to rely on as a streaming option against an Arizona lineup that has produced a 117 wRC+ versus lefties this season.

With Tanner Bibee (shoulder) considered day-to-day and Alex Cobb (hip) not yet ready to return from the injured list, the Guardians are likely to turn to Allen to fill the open spot in their rotation Monday. Allen turned in a 5.67 ERA over his 18 starts with Cleveland before being demoted to Triple-A last month, and though he's posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over his three starts with Columbus, his peripheral statistics (7.5 K-BB%,1.65 HR/9) have been underwhelming. If he does in fact get called up to start Monday for Cleveland, Allen won't be guaranteed any additional turns through the big-league rotation.

Allen is the second member of the Guardians' Opening Day rotation to be sent to Columbus within a week, as Triston McKenzie was previously dispatched to the minors last Sunday. Though he's stayed healthy all season, Allen has struggled mightily to build on a solid 2023 rookie campaign, as he's turned in a 5.67 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 76:35 K:BB across 87.1 innings through 18 starts. He'll cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to newly acquired right-hander Spencer Howard, who could end up entering the rotation the next time Allen's turn comes up Thursday in Detroit.

  Allen (8-3) earned the win Thursday against the Mariners, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks across six innings. He struck out two. Allen did not start off well, allowing a leadoff single to J.P. Crawford followed by a homer to Dylan Moore, but he allowed just one more run the rest of the way to earn his eighth win and complete his fifth quality start of the season. Allen, who also hit a batter on the day, continues to struggle with missing bats, having struck out just eight batters over the last three starts spanning 17 innings after having struck out 51 across 58.2 innings during his first 12 outings. Despite the dearth of strikeouts during this most recent stretch, Allen's ERA stands at 3.17 over the last three games as opposed to 5.83 during the 12 games prior. Things will not get easier for his next start as he's currently scheduled to take on the Orioles in Baltimore.

The lefty wasn't exactly efficient, tossing 47 of 84 pitches for strikes, but he blanked Toronto for five frames before back-to-back hits to lead off the sixth brought home Toronto's only run and chased Allen from the game. The 25-year-old has given up three runs or fewer in five of his last six outings, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 24:12 K:BB in 30.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to build on this performance in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Mariners.

Allen served up back-to-back solo homers to Bryan De La Cruz and Josh Bell in the third inning but otherwise kept Miami's offense fairly quiet. It was a needed bounce-back after Allen was tagged with seven runs through 1.2 innings in his last appearance. He posted a 6.26 ERA in six May starts despite two of them being scoreless outings. For the season, Allen owns a 5.57 ERA and a 54:23 K:BB through 64.2 innings. His next start is projected to be in Toronto next weekend.

Cleveland went up 2-0 in the first inning, and Allen never allowed Minnesota a sniff at the game, as he allowed just a handful of singles across six scoreless frames. It was the second straight start in which the left-hander tossed exactly six innings without giving up a run on the heels of an ugly seven-run, 2.1-inning defeat against Detroit on May 7. That outing is a big reason why his season ERA sits at 4.91 -- it's a much more palatable 3.86 minus the blowup.

However, the left-hander would settle down to blank the White Sox over his final three frames, allowing just two more hits, while the Guardians rallied to tie the game and get Allen off the hook. Still, it's a tough outing for Allen, who'd won his first two starts this season. His ERA is now up to 4.60 with a 1.34 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB through 15.2 innings on the young campaign. Allen will look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively lined up as a tough home matchup Sunday versus the Yankees.

He's been tagged for four homers and 10 runs (nine earned) in his last two starts, both against less than fearsome opponents in the White Sox and Royals, and the addition of Noah Syndergaard (finger) and the eventual return of Cal Quantrill (shoulder) could have the clock ticking on Allen's time in the rotation. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, likely to be a rematch with the ChiSox next weekend back in Cleveland.
