Blue Jays' Brad Penny: Will retire
Penny will retire, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.
Penny, who signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in December, gave up eight runs in seven spring training innings, posting a 1-1 record with the team. In his first three years in the majors, Penny became a workhorse for the Dodgers, recording three straight seasons with 170-plus innings pitched and making back-to-back All Star appearances in 2006-07. However, his career quickly spiraled out of control from there, as he only managed to reach the 170 inning plateau twice in the subsequent years. He'll end his career with 4.29 ERA through 1,925 innings.

Blue Jays' Brad Penny: Signs minors deal with Blue Jays
Penny signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports.
Penny's deal will earn him another shot at cracking a big league roster in 2016, but the 37-year-old hasn't pitched as a reliever since 2012, so he may be aiming at a starting spot. If that's the case, Penny would need to beat out the likes of Jesse Chavez and Drew Hutchison if he does go that route. The deal includes an opt-out option at the end of spring training, which could give the veteran a shot at signing elsewhere should he fail to earn a rotation spot with the Blue Jays out of camp.
