Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Outrighted to Triple-A
Rotowire
The Diamondbacks outrighted Castellanos to Triple-A Reno on Friday.
As expected, Castellanos cleared waivers after Arizona designated him for assignment Aug. 11. Since he had been previously outrighted, Castellanos could have elected free agency, but he'll instead stick around in the organization with the hope of earning a call-up to Arizona later on this season. Castellanos worked out of the bullpen for his seven appearances with the big club earlier in 2024 but has been a regular member of the rotation at Reno, with whom he's compiled a 4.39 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 67.2 innings over 15 outings (14 starts).

Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Picks up first save
Rotowire
Castellanos picked up the save in a win over the Padres on Saturday, striking out one over a perfect two-thirds of an inning.
Castellanos took over with one out in the bottom of the 10th after Thyago Vieira managed to retire just one of the first four batters he faced to open the frame. The recently recalled 26-year-old was then able to retire the final two batters in succession to secure his first save of the campaign. Castellanos has now made two scoreless appearances since surrendering five runs in his season debut, allowing just one baserunner over that stretch. It's worth noting that the Diamondbacks didn't go to Paul Sewald on Saturday after the right-hander surrendered multiple runs in each of his previous two appearances, though they could also just be giving him some rest following his recent struggles.

Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Recalled by Arizona
Rotowire
The Diamondbacks recalled Castellanos from Triple-A Reno on Friday.
It'll be the second stint in the majors for Castellanos this season after his contract was selected by Arizona on June 6. The 28-year-old right-hander made one appearance for the big club June 7 against the Padres and was optioned back to the minors the next day. Castellanos has started 11 games for Triple-A Reno this season, but he will likely serve out of Arizona's bullpen with right-hander Scott McGough being optioned to Reno in a corresponding move and ace Zac Gallen (hamstring) set to return from the injured list Saturday.

This is one of the worst times of the year to need the procedure, as it will be a challenge for Castellanos to get all the way back before the end of the 2023 season. He logged a 5.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 44.1 innings across 11 appearances for the big club.

Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Extent of injury being determined
Rotowire
Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said the team is still trying to determine the extent of Castellanos' arm injury, which is being called a right forearm strain, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
At the time Castellanos was placed on the 15-day injured list, the team described the injury as to his elbow, but now it's being called a forearm strain. Rotowire
Castellanos (3-1) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Friday.
Castellanos has been incredibly consistent over his last three starts, as he's pitched 5.1 innings in each of those outings. The right-hander has a 4.29 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 35.2 innings over nine appearances (seven starts) in 2022, and he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Allows three runs in no-decision
Rotowire
Castellanos did not factor in the decision against Miami on Monday, completing 5.1 innings during which he allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four.
Castellanos wasn't dominant in the performance, but he kept Arizona in the game and finished just two outs shy of a quality start. The right-hander gave up only one extra-base hit -- a fourth-inning homer off the bat of Garrett Cooper -- and threw 53 of 78 pitches for strikes. Castellanos will carry a 4.32 ERA into his next start, which is projected to come at home against the Cubs this weekend.
Castellanos (2-1) earned the win Tuesday at Miami after allowing four hits with four strikeouts and zero walks across 5.2 scoreless innings.
Castellanos gave up only two singles through five frames, and he allowed two more singles in the sixth before being pulled with two outs. It was the best start of the season for the 24-year-old, who surrendered five runs over two innings during his previous start. Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Snags first win of season
Rotowire
Castellanos (1-0) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Mets, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out five.
It was a tidy performance from the right-hander, who tossed 53 of 69 pitches for strikes before exiting. Castellanos has looked good in his two starts, posting a 2.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over nine innings, but his 6:4 K:BB indicate he's been more lucky than dominant. Still, the Diamondbacks will likely keep him in the rotation as long as he's getting results.
Castellanos is the scheduled starter Saturday against the Mets, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
Castellanos is filling in as the fifth starter for a second consecutive turn of the rotation, although Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo stopped short of referring to the right-hander as a permanent starter. He fired four scoreless innings against the Mets last weekend, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out one.
