  • Yankees' Jose Mesa: Returns to Yankees

Mesa was returned to the Yankees on Wednesday and will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Mesa was selected in December's Rule 5 draft but will head back to New York after being designated for assignment last week. The right-hander is set to receive a taste of Triple-A ball for the first time once the 2018 season begins. Last year, he logged 34.1 innings for Double-A Trenton, posting a 0.79 ERA and 0.94 WHIP after starting the year in High-A.

  • Orioles' Jose Mesa: Designated for assignment

Mesa was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Wednesday, Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Mesa was removed from the club's 40-man roster in the wake of Alex Cobb's four-year deal that was finalized Wednesday. The 24-year-old was selected by the Orioles in the Rule 5 draft in December after spending a majority of the 2017 season in High-A within the Yankees' organization. In the coming days, Mesa will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Yankees.

  • Orioles' Jose Mesa: Will be tried as starter

Mesa will be stretched out as a starter during spring training, The Baltimore Sun's Eduardo A. Encina reports.

Mesa was plucked from the Yankees' organization in the Rule 5 draft this past December. He's appeared in 78 minor-league games but has only started nine of those, which makes this an interesting move from manager Buck Showalter. Over 84 innings between the High-A and Double-A levels, he posted a 1.93 ERA and 0.95 WHIP while accumulating 101 strikeouts. Mesa should be monitored throughout spring training as he tries to land a job in the rotation.
