Player Outlook
Oswald Peraza suffered a shoulder injury in February, which forced him to wait until May until he could make his season debut. By the time Peraza started heating up at the plate at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees had traded for Jazz Chisholm and had no place to play Peraza. He finished the season with only 11 plate appearances at the big-league level and is sitting on a lowly .612 OPS so far in the majors. Peraza is just 24, but it feels as if his window to make an impact with the Yankees might have already passed him by. He's out of options, so Peraza should make the Opening Day roster if he's not traded. A fresh start in a new organization might be best for both parties.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Gets in on history with homer

Peraza went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run Saturday in a 20-9 win against the Brewers. Peraza didn't start the contest, but he was given a chance to pinch hit with New York up 18-6 in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old took advantage of the opportunity, drilling a two-run blast to left field. The long ball was the Yankees' ninth of the game, establishing a franchise record.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Could be nearing end in New York

Peraza appears to have been surpassed by Pablo Reyes on the Yankees' depth chart and is on the outside looking in for an Opening Day roster spot, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Early in spring, Peraza was viewed as a candidate to start at third base due to DJ LeMahieu (calf) being set to miss the beginning of the campaign. However, Oswaldo Cabrera has likely locked up that role with a solid exhibition slate while Peraza has slashed just .167/.273/.188. Even more detrimental for Peraza's outlook is that Reyes has had an outstanding spring with a .326/.434/.488 slash line and is also capable of playing more positions on the field. Peraza is out of minor-league options, so if he doesn't make the Yankees' Opening Day roster, the team would need to designate him for assignment.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: In mix for possible 3B opening

Peraza is a candidate to start at third base on Opening Day if DJ LeMahieu (calf) isn't ready to play by then, CJ Haddad of MLB.com reports. Though LeMahieu has said that he doesn't think his calf injury is serious, his Opening Day status is nonetheless in doubt. Oswaldo Cabrera is the favorite to move into a starting role at the hot corner if LeMahieu is sidelined for any regular-season time, but Peraza could push for the potential opening with a strong spring. Through five spring games, Peraza has gone 4-for-12 with an RBI and three runs while Cabrera has batted 2-for-13, though the latter has a home run and a stolen base as part of his stat line.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Peraza to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Since coming up from the minors Aug. 14, Peraza has appeared in four games and gone 2-for-10 with a home run and two runs scored. No corresponding move for his demotion has been announced yet, though he was initially recalled to serve as a roster replacement for Jazz Chisholm (elbow), who is eligible to return from the injured list Friday.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Homers in season debut

Peraza went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-0 win over the Tigers. Making his first start in the majors this year, Peraza extended New York's lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning with a solo shot off Brant Hurter. The 24-year-old slashed just .191/.267/.272 with two homers in 52 games with the Yankees last season, though he'd been swinging the bat well in Triple-A prior to his call-up, batting .291 with a 1.063 OPS and six homers in his last 15 contests. With Jazz Chisholm (elbow) sidelined, Peraza should see some playing time at third base down the stretch.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Summoned to majors

The Yankees recalled Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Peraza will join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Jazz Chisholm (elbow), who was placed on the injured list. The 24-year-old Peraza has slashed .244/.351/.382 with eight home runs and 17 steals across 65 contests with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He may see some starts at third base while Chisholm is out, but Peraza could struggle to see consistent playing time.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Expected to receive promotion

The Yankees are expected to recall Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take the roster spot of the injured Jazz Chisholm (elbow), Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. There's still no word yet on the seriousness of Chisholm's left UCL injury, but a trip to the 10-day injured list is a foregone conclusion. Peraza is the logical choice to replace him on the roster and could see some action at third base in Chisholm's stead, although Oswaldo Cabrera and/or DJ LeMahieu figure to be given first dibs. The 24-year-old Peraza has yet to play an inning for the Yankees this season, having slashed .244/.351/.382 with eight homers and 17 steals across 65 contests with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Returned to Triple-A

Peraza was optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Sunday's 3-1 loss to Atlanta. Peraza was called up to replace Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) on the major-league roster after Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, but Peraza failed to appear in the team's contest against Atlanta before being returned to Triple-A. With Stanton expected to miss approximately four weeks with a left hamstring strain, it's possible that Peraza makes multiple trips between the big leagues and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over that time frame.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Gets call-up from Triple-A

The Yankees recalled Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Peraza will join the big club as a replacement on the 26-man active roster for designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, who was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. After opening the season on the IL with a shoulder injury sustained during spring training, Peraza joined the Yankees' Triple-A club on May 19 and had played there ever since, slashing .178/.313/.215 with one home run and four stolen bases in 128 plate appearances. Given that his production at Triple-A didn't necessarily warrant a call-up, Peraza is unlikely to serve as little more than a depth option for the Yankees while he's in the majors.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Reinstated, optioned to Triple-A

Peraza (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Peraza has been on the injured list since suffering a shoulder injury in February, but he began a rehab assignment May 7. Most recently, he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his only contest with Triple-A, where he will now remain for the time being. The organization will likely allow the 23-year-old to find his footing with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before ultimately elevating him to the major-league roster down the road.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Headed to Triple-A

Peraza (shoulder) was transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to continue his rehab assignment Saturday. Peraza went 2-for-16 with two solo home runs, four runs scored and a stolen base over 16 at-bats in five games with Double-A Somerset, and he'll now advance to the final step of his recovery from the shoulder injury he suffered in February. The 23-year-old could return to the Yankees at some point during their four-game series with the Mariners beginning Monday.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Beginning rehab assignment

Peraza (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Tampa on Tuesday. Peraza is finally ready to test things out in a game setting after working his way back from a right shoulder strain which he initially suffered back in late February. Given how much time he's missed, he will presumably require more than a handful of rehab games. Peraza also isn't a given to immediately be added to the big-league roster, although the status of DJ LeMahieu (foot) will be a factor.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Weeks away from rehab assignment

Peraza (shoulder) has been hitting at the Yankees' complex in Tampa while continuing to progress through his throwing program, but manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that the infielder remains weeks away from playing in minor-league games, per MLB.com. Peraza's shoulder issue first cropped up Feb. 25 and was followed by renewed soreness after he attempted to return to Grapefruit League play March 5. He has been throwing regularly since the first week of April, so the team appears to be giving the 23-year-old ample time to fully recover. Peraza is one of three Yankees third basemen currently on the injured list, as DJ LeMahieu (foot) was pulled early from a minor-league rehab start Tuesday while Jon Berti (groin) has yet to begin a rehab assignment.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Will begin throwing Wednesday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on the Talkin' Yanks podcast Tuesday that Peraza (shoulder) will begin throwing Wednesday. Peraza is working his way back from a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder, but Boone expressed optimism Tuesday that it wouldn't take the infielder long to get ramped back up. With Oswaldo Cabrera off to a hot start, Jon Berti now around and DJ LeMahieu (foot) likely to beat Peraza back from the injured list, the latter could be sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once he's healthy.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Moves to IL

The Yankees placed Peraza (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Peraza is facing an expected recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks for a right shoulder strain, an injury that first cropped up in late February. Per MLB.com, manager Aaron Boone said last week that Peraza was expected to resume hitting soon, but it's unclear if the 23-year-old has advanced to that portion of his recovery program. Regardless, Peraza will be sidelined until around late April or early May, which likely gives Jahmai Jones a multi-week run on the active roster as a utility player.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Undergoing imaging on shoulder

Peraza is expected to undergo imaging on his right shoulder after reporting renewed soreness following a return to the lineup Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Peraza was playing in his first game in a week Tuesday but experienced a recurrence of the shoulder issue that's plagued him this spring. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told Sherman that he doesn't believe Peraza's injury to be serious, but more will be known after the test results are in. Peraza is competing for a spot on the Yanks' bench.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Back in action Tuesday

Peraza (shoulder) is starting at second base and batting fifth for the Yankees in Tuesday's game versus the Mets in his return to Grapefruit League play. Peraza missed a week of action with tightness in his right shoulder but is feeling well enough to give it a go in this one. The young infielder is competing for a spot on the Yankees' bench but could wind up back at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he can play every day.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Not ready to return yet

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Peraza is still feeling some "pinching" in his right shoulder, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. The team had been hoping Peraza could return to Grapefruit League action as soon as Friday, but he's not ready just yet. Boone doesn't believe the injury to be serious, but throwing is still problematic, particularly when Peraza would have to play third base. He's considered day-to-day.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Active for Game 2

Peraza (knee) will start at shortstop and bat seventh during Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox. Peraza has been dealing with swelling in his left knee, but he seems to be feeling well enough to return to the lineup after sitting the first game of Tuesday's action. The 23-year-old has had a quiet season in the majors overall, but he's gone 10-for-31 with four RBI since the start of September.

  • Yankees' Oswald Peraza: Could play during doubleheader

Peraza (knee) could be available to play at some point during Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Red Sox, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Peraza is not starting the first game of the double dip, which is the second straight contest he's been absent from the lineup. The swelling in his left knee has gone down, though, and while it doesn't sound like he'll start the nightcap, he should be available off the bench. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is handling third base in the first game.
