  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Logs first hold

Cantillo walked one and struck out one over a scoreless one-third of an inning in Monday's 6-4 win over the Yankees. A day after recording his first MLB save, Cantillo was credited with his first hold when he finished out the eighth inning. The 25-year-old lefty began the season as a multi-inning reliever but has not worked more than one inning over the last four appearances. Cantillo has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 15 over 11.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Secures extra-inning save

Cantillo earned the save in Sunday's 5-4 win at Pittsburgh, pitching a scoreless inning while allowing no hits and one walk. He had no strikeouts. After Emmanuel Clase blew the save in the ninth inning, Cantillo locked up the win with his first career save in the extra frame. The 25-year-old southpaw has shined in a bullpen role, pitching to a 1.59 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 11.1 innings. If Cantillo keeps pitching well, he could see more chances in high-leverage situations like Sunday.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Perfect relief appearance

Cantillo struck out two over 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the Angels. Cantillo had his best outing of the season, retiring all seven batters he faced in a low-leverage situation. The 25-year-old left-hander, who was moved to the bullpen after losing out on a bid for the rotation, had allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks over his first three innings.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Opening season in bullpen

Cantillo will open the season in the Guardians' bullpen, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Cantillo lost out on the fifth spot in Cleveland's rotation but will be included on its Opening Day roster as a reliever. The left-hander made eight starts and one relief appearance last season, collecting a 4.89 ERA and 44:15 K:BB over 38.2 frames. Cantillo could still be considered for starts at some point later this season.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Makes third spring start

Cantillo allowed three hits and two walks while striking out one over three scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against the Athletics. Cantillo became the first Cleveland starter to reach three innings this spring. The lefty was given a big cushion by the offense, which produced three home runs and a 7-0 lead while he was in the game. Despite the number of baserunners allowed, Cantillo managed to escape without allowing a run. The 25-year-old remains in the mix for what appears to be two contested spots in the rotation -- beyond Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams and Luis L. Ortiz -- and Cantillo sports a 6.00 ERA with six walks over six spring innings.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Chased early Saturday

Cantillo allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two over one inning in Saturday's spring start against the Cubs. Cantillo was dialed in during his first Cactus League start, but the left-hander struggled to command his fastball the second time out and kept falling behind hitters. He was eventually pulled with one out in the first inning before coming back to start the second. He then walked three batters and left his second frame with two outs. It was a stark contrast to Cantillo's first spring outing, when 18 of his 21 offerings landed in the zone.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Lasts 4.1 innings vs. Twins

Cantillo didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Minnesota, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out six. Cantillo pitched well for the most part Thursday, though he struggled with command at times and ultimately was forced out of the game midway through the fifth inning after throwing 86 pitches. The 24-year-old Cantillo has allowed just two earned runs across 18 innings in his last four outings, lowering his ERA to 4.63 with a 1.20 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through his first 35 major-league innings. The left-hander is currently lined up for a home matchup with the Reds next week in what could be his final regular-season start.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Tosses five scoreless in win

Cantillo (2-3) earned the win against the Rays on Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out six over five scoreless innings. Cantillo threw just 45 of 78 pitches for strikes but kept the Rays off balance with an impressive 15 whiffs. The rookie has won two consecutive contests, yielding just one earned run while posting a fantastic 16:1 K:BB. On the season, he owns a 4.99 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB across 30.2 innings and lines up to face the Twins next week.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Recalled ahead of start

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus on Monday. Cantillo will make a start Monday against the White Sox. Ben Lively had been in line to take the hill Monday, but Lively has struggled lately and will have his turn pushed back or perhaps skipped altogether. The left-handed Cantillo has produced an unsightly 7.71 ERA and 15:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings in four starts and one relief appearance with the Guardians this season.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Sent down

Cantillo was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday. Cantillo's demotion was expected after he served as the 27th man in Monday's doubleheader versus the Royals. He's pitched to a 7.71 ERA over 18.2 innings in the majors this year. With an off day Thursday, the Guardians may be able to get by with a four-man rotation until Alex Cobb (fingernail) is ready to return, which means Cantillo could be staying at Triple-A for a while.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Recalled, set to pitch in Game 1

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus prior to Monday's doubleheader with the Royals. Cantillo is expected to pitch in the first game of the twin bill, likely serving as a bulk reliever once opening pitcher Nick Sandlin exits the contest after working an inning or two. The Guardians had previously deployed Cantillo as a traditional starter in each of his prior four outings with the big club, but the lefty submitted an 8.47 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 17 innings across those contests. Cantillo is expected to be returned to Columbus following the twin bill.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Set to work behind opener Monday

Cantillo will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Monday and is expected to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Nick Sandlin in the first game of the Guardians' doubleheader with the Royals, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Cantillo had started in each of his previous four appearances with the big club, but manager Stephen Vogt will have the young lefty work behind an opener with the hope of generating better results. The 24-year-old had been roughed up over his four starts with Cleveland, recording an 8.47 ERA and 1.76 WHIP while striking out 14 and issuing nine walks over 17 innings. He's likely to be returned to Columbus following the twin bill.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Heading back to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. While making his fourth start of the season for the Guardians on Wednesday against the Yankees, Cantillo was dealt a third consecutive loss after yielding seven earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings. Despite being optioned to Columbus, Cantillo could still be a candidate to get called up again Monday, when the Guardians will require two starting pitchers for a doubleheader with the Royals. However, with Cantillo now owning an 8.47 ERA and 1.76 WHIP through 17 innings with the big club, the Guardians could be compelled to go in a different direction.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Tough night in New York

Cantillo (0-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Guardians fell 8-1 to the Yankees, surrendering seven runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five. Two-run homers by Juan Soto in the first inning and Aaron Judge in the third accounted for most of the damage off the rookie southpaw. Cantillo got the hook after 88 pitches (50 strikes), and he's now served up six long balls while walking nine batters in his first 17 big-league innings, highlighting how much work he'll need to do to improve his control and command before he'll be a viable fantasy option. With Alex Cobb (finger) out until the end of the month, Cantillo is likely to get at least one more start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Royals.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Recalled ahead of start

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus in advance of his start Wednesday against the Yankees. The lefty will pick up his fourth career MLB start after yielding nine earned runs on 15 hits and six walks while striking out nine over 13 innings across his first three outings with the big club. Following Wednesday's game, Cantillo could stick around with the Guardians to make another start during Monday's doubleheader with the Royals, but he could be optioned back to Triple-A after that if Alex Cobb (fingernail) is able to return from the 15-day injured list later on in the week.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Sent back to Triple-A

Cantillo was returned to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday after serving as the 27th man in Friday's doubleheader versus the Twins. Cantillo allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 5.2 innings, but he took his second loss in three major-league starts. With Matthew Boyd (elbow) nearing a return from the injured list, Cantillo has no obvious path to a rotation spot for the Guardians unless another injury arises.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Falls to Twins

Cantillo (0-2) took the loss in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader with the Twins, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two. Cantillo allowed a run in the first inning before Minnesota added solo homers in the second and fourth. The 24-year-old has allowed three runs in each of his three starts in the majors this year, posting a 6.23 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP and nine strikeouts over 13 innings. The left-hander figures to return to Triple-A following Friday's outing, where he has a 2.79 ERA in seven starts.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Getting start Saturday

Cantillo will start Saturday versus the Orioles in place of the injured Tanner Bibee (shoulder), Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Bibee is having his start pushed back a few days as he battles some shoulder tightness. Cantillo yielded three earned over 3.1 innings this past Sunday against the Phillies in his major-league debut. The Guardians have a doubleheader next Friday in Minnesota, and Cantillo will be a candidate to get another start that day.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Struggles in debut

Cantillo escaped with a no-decision in Sunday's win against the Phillies, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings. Called up Sunday to make his MLB debut, Cantillo struggled against a potent Phillies offense. Kyle Schwarber took Cantillo deep two times -- a leadoff home run in the opening frame and a two-run shot in the third. The 24-year-old southpaw struggled with his command, walking three batters while using 75 pitches to get through 3.1 innings. If Cantillo remains in the Guardians rotation, he lines up to face the Orioles next weekend, which will be another tough test for the rookie.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Called up for MLB debut

The Guardians called up Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus to start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. The 24-year-old missed the start of the Triple-A season due to a hamstring strain, but he's been effective since coming off the injured list in early June with a 2.79 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 39:19 K:BB over 29 innings. If he delivers a strong debut, Cantillo could receive multiple turns through the rotation for Cleveland.
