  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Heading to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Arias to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. The Guardians have valued Arias for his ability to play all over the infield and outfield during his time in the majors over parts of the last three seasons, but he had fallen out of favor lately, with recent call-ups Angel Martinez and Daniel Schneemann having supplanted him as superior utility options. Arias should get the opportunity to play on an everyday basis as he heads to Columbus, though it may take an injury to another Guardians position player or a downturn in performance from Martinez and/or Schneemann before Arias resurfaces in the big leagues.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Back to bench Sunday

Arias is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals. Arias started in five of the past six games while seeing action at three different positions, but he'll head to the bench in Sunday's series finale. The Guardians should continue to open up regular playing time for Arias against left-handed pitching, but his starting opportunities against right-handed pitching may be more sporadic while the Guardians have all of their regular hitters available with the exception of outfielder Will Brennan (ribs), who was recently placed on the injured list.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homers, steals base in loss

Arias went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base against Baltimore in a loss Wednesday. Arias accounted for two of Cleveland's five hits in the defeat and plated the team's final run with his fifth-inning solo homer. The utility man has perked up at the plate of late, batting an even .400 (10-for-25) with a pair of long balls and five RBI over his past nine games. Arias missed some time due to a family medical emergency during that span and isn't an everyday player for the Guardians, so the hot stretch extends back to the beginning of June.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Drives in three in win

Arias went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 10-8 win over the Orioles. Arias has been in the lineup for the last two games since he returned from the family medical emergency list. The utility man provided a two-run double in the second inning and an RBI single in the eighth as one of four Guardians to log multiple hits in the contest. Arias is slashing .231/.262/.358 with two home runs, 14 RBI, 14 runs scored and four stolen bases on six attempts over 141 plate appearances this season.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Activated, starting Monday

Arias (personal) was reinstated from the family medical emergency list and will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Monday's series opener in Baltimore. Cleveland sent infielder Angel Martinez back to Triple-A Columbus to make room on the 26-man active roster for Arias, who rejoins the big club after missing the previous three games while tending to a personal matter. Though he'll immediately enter the lineup in his return to the Guardians as the Orioles send southpaw Cade Povich to the mound, the righty-hitting Arias is expected to serve as a bench player against right-handed pitching more often than not.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Goes on family emergency list

The Guardians placed Arias on the family medical emergency list Friday. By rule, Arias will be away from the club for the next 3-to-7 days. Angel Martinez will take his spot on the Guardians' roster.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Pops second homer

Arias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Marlins. Arias saw a run of playing time in late May and early June, but he's slipped back into a utility role over the last week. The infielder has gone a modest 6-for-28 (.214) over his last 10 contests, though he's recorded three extra-base hits in that span. Arias is slashing .215/.250/.339 with two homers, four stolen bases, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored, seven doubles and a triple over 128 plate appearances this season.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Garners fifth straight start

Arias will start at third base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Nationals. Arias will stick in the lineup for a fifth consecutive game, this time filling in at third base while Jose Ramirez gets a day out of the field and serves as Cleveland's designated hitter. In addition to the hot corner, Arias picked up starts at second base, shortstop and in right field over the previous four games. The Guardians faced left-handed starters in three of those contests, and though Arias should be a fixture in the lineup versus lefties, he'll likely serve as more of a part-time player when Cleveland opposes righties.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Swipes bag in win

Arias went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-4 win over the Angels. Arias had gone 5-for-34 (.147) over his first 14 games in May, so it's no surprise his playing time has been sparse lately. His last multi-hit effort was April 20. The 24-year-old is sporting a poor .224/.248/.337 slash line with one home run, four steals, nine RBI, 10 runs scored, six doubles and a triple over 101 plate appearances in a utility role.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Picks up steal

Arias went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 6-2 loss to Atlanta. Arias' last four starts have been evenly split between second and third, providing opportunities for Jose Ramirez and Andres Gimenez to get rest. Arias is off to a solid start this season in a utility role, slashing .278/.304/.426 with three steals, one home run, eight RBI and seven runs scored across 56 plate appearances. He's already played at six different positions this season, so he should be able to be in the lineup semi-regularly despite lacking a single obvious path to playing time.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Sitting in second straight

Arias is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Arias made six consecutive starts from April 13 through 18, but he's now been back on the bench three times in the Guardians' ensuing five games. Though Arias is maintaining a respectable .781 OPS over 48 plate appearances on the season, he looks like he'll have to settle for a part-time role for now while Cleveland continues to stick with Brayan Rocchio as its primary shortstop.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Rewarded with fifth straight start

Arias will start in center field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. After making just four starts in the Guardians' first 13 games, Arias now finds himself in the lineup for a fifth straight contest. Though he doesn't have a direct path to a starting role at any one spot while the Guardians are seemingly committed to Brayan Rocchio as their primary shortstop, Arias has made it tough for manager Stephen Vogt to take him out of the lineup while he's wielding a hot bat. Over his last four games, Arias has gone 8-for-16 with five extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple and one home run) and one walk.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homer shy of cycle

Arias went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, one RBI and one run scored in Monday's 6-0 win over the Red Sox. Arias came up a home run short of a cycle, but it was still another excellent game for the utility man. He's gone 6-for-10 over his last three contests, with four of those hits going for extra bases. Monday's strong performance lifted his batting average to .308, and he's added a stolen base, five RBI and five runs scored through 27 plate appearances. Arias doesn't have a path to everyday at-bats yet, but he's putting the pressure on Brayan Rocchio, as shortstop has been the weak spot in the Guardians' infield so far.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Set for utility role

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt announced Friday that Brayan Rocchio will begin the season as the club's primary shortstop, pushing Arias into a utility role, Tom Withers of the Associated Pressreports. Arias had a chance to win the shortstop job but posted a .623 OPS across 37 plate appearances during spring training. The 24-year-old will still make the roster as a utility option, but he likely won't see enough playing time to be relevant in most fantasy formats.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Rejoins lineup

Arias (illness) is starting at shortstop and batting fifth in Friday's Cactus League game against the Royals. Arias hasn't seen the field since last weekend due to an illness, but he's back in action for Friday's spring contest. The 24-year-old appears poised to begin the season as Cleveland's primary shortstop, though his .210/.275/.352 slash line and 32.8 percent strikeout rate likely won't bring much job security.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Scratched with illness

Arias was scratched from Sunday's Cactus League lineup versus the Reds due to an illness, Mandy Bell of MLB.comreports. Arias is feeling under the weather and won't play as scheduled Sunday, but he should be back in action soon. The 24-year-old had a .627 OPS in 122 games last season and could being 2024 as Cleveland's primary shortstop, though he's not likely to have much security in that role.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Batting cleanup Sunday

Arias (wrist) will bat in the cleanup spot for Sunday's spring training game against the Mariners. Arias' 2023 season came to an abrupt end after he sustained a fractured right wrist in late September. He finished last season batting .210/.275/.352 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI over 345 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Suffers fractured wrist

Cleveland placed Arias on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured right wrist. Arias suffered the injury in the fourth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Reds and will finish the 2023 campaign with a .210/.275/.352 slash line, 10 homers, 26 RBI, three steals and 36 runs in 122 major-league games. Brayan Rocchio has been summoned from Triple-A Columbus to help out at shortstop.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Out of Sunday's lineup

Arias is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Arias is hitting .167 with a 34.1 percent strikeout rate over his past 11 games and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale. Jose Tena will start at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: On bench Wednesday

Arias is out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Royals. Arias will be on the bench for the third time in seven games. Prior to that span, the 23-year-old had appeared in 13 consecutive games. Jose Tena will start in his place at shortstop and bat eighth.
