Lazaro Montes is a classic right field prospect, with a hulking 6-foot-3 frame, light tower power, a big arm and plenty of swing and miss. He turned 20 in October and is already listed at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, so there's a chance he may end up at first base or designated hitter in time. A lefty slugger, Montes struck out less than expected (19.1 K%) during a near-flawless run at Single-A Modesto and then his K-rate jumped to a more illustrative 29.6 percent while he slashed .260/.378/.427 with eight home runs in 51 games for High-A Everett. We can probably rule out the really high-end outcomes and retire the Yordan Alvarez comps, as Montes appears to be firmly power-over-hit, but he could still do enough damage to hit fourth or fifth in the lineup while providing more value in OBP leagues than batting average leagues.

    The Mariners reassigned Montes to minor-league camp Wednesday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Montes impressed in his Cactus League opportunities, going 5-for-13 with a couple home runs. The 20-year-old has some of the biggest power in all of the minor leagues but will hope to make more contact after he struck out at nearly a 30 percent clip last season at High-A Everett.

The 19-year-old Cuban slugger has arguably been the most impressive prospect at Single-A through the first five weeks of the season. Everyone knows about his 70-grade raw power, it will just come down to how good Montes' hit tool is. Thus far, he's not showing any weaknesses against Single-A pitchers, and Montes may soon get promoted to High-A Everett, which offers a hitter-friendly home park.

The power is enticing, of course -- he's racked up 21 extra-base hits -- but the 17-year-old Cuban has struck out at a remarkably high clip (35.6 percent), which portends trouble once he faces higher-level pitching. Of course, being that he's still more than two months shy of his 18th birthday, there's a lot to like in Montes even though he's the definition of a high-variance prospect. Dynasty managers with an appetite for risk would do well to snatch him up.
