Will Wagner spent most of his time with Toronto last season, posting a .237/.336/.298 slash line with no homers, seven RBI and a stolen base over 132 plate appearances. He was acquired by San Diego at the trade deadline but rarely played with the Padres, going 2-for-15 over 15 games, only one of which was a start. Wagner offers little game power or speed (he has just two homers and one theft over 79 career major-league games), so his offensive impact will have to rely upon his contact skills, which he's demonstrated with a career 18.7% strikeout rate. Wagner is a good enough hitter to perhaps carve out a niche as a utility infielder, but San Diego's offseason signing of Sung-Mun Song further impedes Wagner's path to playing time. He has minor-league options remaining, so Wagner could spend another year bouncing back and forth between the farm and the majors.

    Wagner is dealing with an oblique strain and hasn't done any baseball activity since the beginning of March, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Per Acee, Wagner will "almost certainly" start the season on the injured list. The infielder had been slated to battle for a reserve role during spring training, but he got into only five games before getting hurt, going 0-for-9 with two walks and two strikeouts. Even if Wagner was healthy, his likelihood of making the Opening Day roster had been considered slim.
