Player Outlook
A 26-year-old righty whom the Brewers added to the 40-man roster this offseason, Chad Patrick had excellent results as an older starter at Triple-A in 2024. He had a 2.90 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 145 strikeouts in 136.1 innings, and he closed with a 1.73 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 39:5 K:BB in 26 innings over his last five starts. Patrick will throw the kitchen sink at batters, leaning on his 88-mph cutter and upper-80s changeup while sometimes throwing his fastball (he throws a four-seamer and a sinker) less than 30 percent of the time. He also mixes in a mid-80s slider, but his cutter and changeup are his best offerings. He's willing to pitch backwards, often dialing up his low-90s fastball, which has good movement, for Ks while hitters are sitting on his cutter. The Brewers have a good track record of developing unsung starting pitchers, and Patrick certainly qualifies, as he's on his third organization and has never pitched in the majors. He'll presumably open the year back at Triple-A to serve as rotation depth, but he has little left to prove in the minors.

  • Brewers' Chad Patrick: Secures first career win

Patrick (1-0) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four in Sunday's 8-2 win over the Reds. Patrick got over the hump for his first career major-league win after throwing 4.2 scoreless innings Tuesday against the Royals. The right-hander was nearly spotless Sunday, with the only blemish on his line coming on a solo homer from Spencer Steer in the top of the fifth inning. Patrick has now allowed just one run over 10 innings in two turns in Milwaukee's rotation, and he's tentatively set to return to the mound Saturday on the road against the Diamondbacks.

  • Brewers' Chad Patrick: Another start on tap this weekend

Patrick is listed as the Brewers' probable pitcher for Sunday's game versus the Reds, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Patrick is set to make his first major-league start Tuesday against the Royals. It's possible the Brewers change their mind if things go particularly poorly Tuesday, but for now Patrick is lined up for another start this weekend. Patrick may be needed for additional starts after that, although Jose Quintana is likely to be ready to join the rotation next week.

  • Brewers' Chad Patrick: Recalled ahead of opener

The Brewers recalled Patrick from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday. Patrick was previously optioned to Nashville on March 9, but he'll wind up being included on the Brewers' Opening Day roster due to Tobias Myers (oblique) beginning the season on the injured list and Jose Quintana needing more time to ramp up before making his Milwaukee debut. The Brewers are carrying just three designated starting pitchers on their roster, and though Patrick will be available out of the bullpen for the opening series in New York, he could end up making a start or serving as a bulk reliever during next week's series versus the Royals.

  • Athletics' Chad Patrick: Traded to Oakland

The Diamondbacks traded Patrick to the Athletics on Monday in exchange for Jace Peterson and cash considerations. Patrick has spent all season in Double-A and holds a 4.71 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 91.2 innings across 19 starts. The 24-year-old righty can strike out batters at a decent rate, but his struggles with command have impacted his ability to limit baserunners. Patrick still has a lot of work to do before he'll be able to contribute at the major-league level.
