• Twins' Alan Roden: Hot spring may not win roster spot

  Roden went 2-for-5 in Friday's Grapefruit loss to Boston. Despite hitting .323 (10 for 31) with a home run this spring, both Matthew Leach of MLB.com and The Athletic project Roden to not make the Opening Day roster. James Outman is having a strong spring and is out of options, so it's thought the Twins will send Roden to the minors to begin the season. However, the Twins outfield situation is still in flux. The team has too many left-handed hitting outfielders and a trade late in spring training seems possible. Roden could still win a role as a strong-side platoon player in left field if he wins a spot over Outman.

• Twins' Alan Roden: Delivers grand slam

  Roden went 2-for-3 with a grand slam during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. Roden put his team in front during the top of the fifth inning by smacking a grand slam. It was evident he was seeing the ball well at the dish throughout the day, as he lined out to third base and singled to center in his other two at-bats. Roden's lack of power was a concern during his rookie campaign, so Sunday's showing is a promising start to the spring for the Creighton product.

• Twins' Alan Roden: Recovered from thumb surgery

  Roden, who had surgery in August to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, had a normal offseason, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. It sounds like he's fully healthy as spring training begins. Roden will compete for a starting role in the outfield but could also be part of a platoon in the corner outfield. He struggled in his first taste of the majors last season (hitting .204 with a .589 OPS in 43 games with the Blue Jays) but had a second strong season at Triple-A (.919 OPS). He was traded to the Twins at the deadline and struggled again with a .463 OPS in 12 games before suffering a season-ending thumb injury.

• Twins' Alan Roden: Will undergo surgery

  Roden is scheduled to undergo surgery for his left thumb, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Roden was already slated to miss the entire 2025 season after being transferred to the 60-day IL on Tuesday, and after seeing a hand specialist, it's been determined that surgery on his left thumb is the best course of action. Roden will end the 2025 campaign with a .191/.261/.294 slash line with one steal, one triple, two home runs and nine RBI across 153 plate appearances between the Blue Jays and Twins.

Minnesota placed Roden on the 10-day IL on Friday due to a left thumb sprain, and though he had been scheduled to meet with a hand specialist before his next steps were determined, the Twins have already elected to rule him out for the season. After being acquired from the Blue Jays ahead of the trade deadline, Roden hit just .158/.200/.263 with an 0:13 BB:K in 12 games for Minnesota. He'll likely have to compete for a strong-side platoon role in the Twins outfield next spring.
