Guardians' Carlos Vargas: Placed on 60-day injured list
Vargas (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.
The move doesn't affect Vargas' timeline, as he underwent Tommy John surgery at the start of last season and isn't expected to return until the middle of this year. It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Guardians to add new signing Luke Maile.

Vargas underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Vargas has some potential, but he wasn't going to help out Cleveland at the big-league level anytime soon, as he's yet to advance to full-season ball. He'll now be out of game action until sometime in the middle of the 2022 season.

Indians' Carlos Vargas: Joins 40-man roster
Vargas was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.
Vargas has yet to advance past the Rookie level, and the canceled minor-league season in 2020 didn't allow him to continue his development. He could spend the 2021 campaign with the Low-A or High-A club, and he'll now be protected from the upcoming Rule 5 draft.

Indians' Carlos Vargas: Opens in extended ST
Vargas is opening the year in extended spring training before being assigned to a short-season affiliate in June, MLB.com reports.
Vargas will be held back with fellow high-upside hurlers Ethan Hankins and Lenny Torres. Vargas is the least refined of the trio, so we probably won't see him at Low-A until 2020. He has a monster fastball but still needs to greatly improve his command and secondary offerings. Vargas may return to the AZL but could finish the year in the New York-Penn League.
