Barmes still hopes to be added to a 25-man roster this season, and he will need to find another organization other than the Royals to make that happen. He was mostly used for organizational depth in the middle infield positions while with the Royals.

Royals' Clint Barmes: Re-signs with Royals on minor league contract
Barmes re-signed with the Royals on a minor league contract Friday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
The Royals released the aging shortstop Monday, but they saw enough value in him to bring him back on a minor league pact. That being said, he'll likely spend 2016 with Triple-A Omaha acting as organizational depth at the middle infield positions.

Clint Barmes: Working on minor league deal with Royals
Barmes is working on resigning with the Royals on a minor league contract, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
A source reportedly said the deal is likely, so the veteran shortstop could be back in Royal blue despite being released Monday. That being said, he'll likely just act as organizational depth in the Royals organization, with a callup only happening if the Royals middle infield gets hit with injuries.

The Royals released Barmes on Monday.
The journeyman infielder landed a minor league contract with the Royals in the offseason, and the first two weeks of camp appeared to be going swimmingly, as he went 6-for-19 (.316) with two RBI and one run scored. However, he mustered just two hits in his final 15 spring at-bats, all but forcing Kansas City's hand. Nevertheless, the 37-year-old will likely land elsewhere as organizational depth.

Barmes signed a minor league deal with the Royals on Thursday, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.
The 36-year-old doesn't appear ready to call it a career just yet. He spent 2015 with the Padres, hitting .232/.281/.353 with three home runs and 16 RBI. However, if he doesn't make the big league team, retirement could be looming. His fantasy value is likely to be minimal in 2016.

Barmes' option for 2016 was declined by the Padres, making him a free agent.
It's uncertain if Barmes, who turns 37 before the start of the 2016 season, will continue his playing career or hang up the boots after 13 seasons. He hit .232/.281/.353 in 98 games with San Diego in 2015, bringing his career batting line to .245/.294/.379.
