  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Shoulder injury recovery on track

Ryan has made good progress in his recovery from a shoulder injury that ended his season in early August, Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey told MLB.com. "Reports on him have been nothing but positive, kind of exactly what we expect for this to recover," Falvey said. "So that's good news." Ryan suffered a Grade 2 teres major strain during a start Aug. 9 and missed the rest of the regular season. While no details were given about Ryan's progress, it sounds like he'll be ready for the start of spring training. He'll return to work at the top of the Minnesota rotation after going 7-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 9.8 K/9 in 23 starts last season.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Won't return in regular season

The Twins transferred Ryan (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Ryan won't be eligible for activation until Oct. 9, ending his regular season. The right-hander is dealing with a Grade 2 teres major strain and could potentially be available if the Twins make the postseason, but a previous timeline of "weeks to months" doesn't provide much clarity. The transaction, along with Trevor Richards' DFA, opens up spots for Michael Tonkin and Caleb Boushley on the 40-man and 26-man rosters, respectively.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Heads to IL with teres major strain

The Twins placed Ryan on the 15-day injured list Friday with a Grade 2 right teres major strain, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday that Ryan's recovery will take "weeks to months," so the right-hander's season could be over. The injury is a massive blow to Ryan's fantasy managers and to a Twins club fighting for a playoff spot. Louie Varland will be recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians, and he might now be needed in the big-league rotation indefinitely.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Cruises to seventh win

Ryan (7-7) earned the win Friday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven. The Minnesota right-hander took care of business against a feeble Chicago lineup, picking up his first post-All-Star break win in this 103-pitch performance. The only blemish on his evening came in the third inning when Miguel Vargas launched a two-run homer to left field. Ryan has now pitched to a 3.59 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 145:23 K:BB across 133 innings this season. The 28-year-old is scheduled to make his next against the Cubs at Wrigley Field next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Allows four runs in no-decision

Ryan did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out six. Ryan started strong, managing to avoid pitching from the stretch through four innings, with a third-inning two-out solo homer from Eric Haase representing the only batter to reach base against him. Ryan then ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing hits to four of the first five batters he faced with three runs crossing the plate. He managed to complete the sixth in line for the win, but a leaky bullpen prevented him from grabbing his seventh victory of the season. Ryan has now allowed nine runs through 11.1 innings over his last two starts, though his season stats remain impressive. Through 20 starts, Ryan has completed 120.2 innings with a 3.65 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 130 strikeouts. He's currently projected to next take the hill when the Twins travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers next weekend.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Strikes out eight in win

Ryan (6-5) earned the win against the Astros on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Ryan surrendered a run in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fourth while receiving plenty of early run support from his teammates. He generated 15 swinging strikes on 110 pitches and has completed at least five frames in each of his 18 starts this season. On the year, the 28-year-old owns an impressive 3.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 118:16 K:BB through 109.1 innings and lines up to face the Giants next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans 10 Sunday

Ryan allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings Sunday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. Ryan got through four innings unscathed while racking up eight of his 10 strikeouts over that span. He found himself in some immediate trouble in the fifth after allowing a leadoff triple and wound up surrendering two runs in the inning following a pair of base knocks and a fielding error. Sunday was Ryan's second double-digit strikeout performance this season and his second straight outing without walking a batter. He's given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts, though that's only amounted to one win. The 28-year-old will carry an excellent 3.21 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 110:15 K:BB (103.2 innings) into a meeting with the ascending Astros over the weekend.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Records quality start in victory

Ryan (5-5) earned the win over Oakland on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters over seven innings. Ryan surrendered a two-run homer to Tyler Soderstrom in the second inning, but those were the only runs the A's managed against the righty hurler. Ryan finished with a stat line very similar to his previous outing, when he gave up two runs on three hits over seven frames versus Pittsburgh, though that performance came in a losing effort. The 28-year-old pitcher has four quality starts over his past five appearances and has posted a 2.73 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB across 33 frames during that span.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Takes hard-luck loss

Ryan (4-5) was stuck with the loss Friday against the Pirates, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out eight. Ryan was excellent Friday, but the Twins couldn't muster any offense against Mitch Keller in an eventual 3-0 defeat. Despite the loss, it was a strong bounce-back effort from Ryan after he allowed five runs in five innings in a loss to Houston in his last outing. The right-hander sports a 3.30 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and 85:13 K:BB across 79 innings. Ryan's currently in line for a home matchup with the Rockies in his next start.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Struggles against Astros

Ryan (4-4) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. Ryan was stung by the long ball in the loss, giving up a season-high four homers. He has allowed at least that many home runs in a start four times in his career, though he came into Saturday on pace for a career-best 0.9 HR/9. Ryan saw his season ERA jump from 2.96 to 3.38 as a result of the poor start, but that mark is still on pace for the best of his career.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Blanks Nats for third win

Ryan (3-3) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 rout of the Nationals. He struck out six. The right-hander didn't let a baserunner get past second base as he delivered his seventh quality start of the season in 10 trips to the mound. Tuesday's outing was also the first time in 2024 that Ryan had issued multiple free passes. He'll take a 3.15 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 64:9 K:BB through 60 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Royals.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Tagged by Yankees

Ryan (2-3) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out five. Ryan surrendered more than three earned runs for the first time all year, as the Yankees matched that total in the first inning alone. The right-hander's struggles resulted in a shortened outing, and he failed to complete six frames for the first time since April 19. Ryan owns a 3.86 ERA and a 28:4 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last five starts. He's lined up to face the Nationals in Washington early next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in second win

Ryan (2-2) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings in a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven without walking a batter. A solo shot by Isiah Kiner-Falefa accounted for the only blemish on Ryan's line. The right-hander fired 75 of 104 pitches for strikes in his longest outing of the season, as he produced his fourth straight quality start and sixth of the year. Ryan will take a 3.21 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 53:6 K:BB through 47.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Yankees.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Solid over six frames versus Boston

Ryan (1-2) was tagged with the loss after he pitched six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five batters in Sunday's 9-2 defeat to the Red Sox. Ryan tossed three scoreless frames to open his outing Sunday before giving up an RBI double to Rob Refsnyder in the fourth and then a two-run homer to Ceddanne Rafaela in the fifth inning. The right-hander has now recorded three straight quality starts, and he has yet to allow more than three runs in any outing this season. Ryan will carry a 3.54 ERA and 1.01 WHIP into his next projected start Friday in Toronto.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Struggles with power

Ryan (1-1) picked up the win Wednesday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. Although Ryan only gave up four hits on the day, three of them went for extra bases, including solo homers to Kevin Pillar and Korey Lee. Ryan has been tagged for three or more earned runs in three of his five starts this season but boasts an incredible 38:4 K:BB and a 1.01 WHIP in 28.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up for a rematch with the White Sox early next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Stumbles against Tigers

Ryan allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out six during the loss to Detroit. Ryan coughed up three runs in the first three innings Friday as he produced his worst start of the year. The 27-year-old has given up 10 runs (eight earned) over his last three appearances, driving his ERA up to 3.57 through 22.2 frames. He forced 12 whiffs on 93 pitches, all coming on the fastball and sweeper. Still searching for his first win, Ryan is lined up for a home matchup with the White Sox next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Working on new sinker

Ryan has been working on a new sinker this spring and threw it in Friday's spring training start, MLB.com reports. Ryan gave up two runs with two strikeouts and a walk over two innings Friday against Boston. Ryan doesn't have great velocity (92.3 average mph fastball in 2023) but has an extremely deceptive four-seam fastball that helped him generate an excellent 29.3 strikeout percentage and 14.2 percent swinging strike rate in 2023. However, his secondary pitches all took a step backward last season, so the development of another pitch could be a significant addition and is something to monitor this spring. He worked on the new sinker at Driveline in Arizona in the offseason.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Strikes out 10 in win

Ryan (11-10) got the win over the Angels on Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out 10 over six innings. Ryan struck out double-digit batters for the sixth time this season and for the first time since July 21. The seven hits were the most he's allowed since Aug. 2, but he displayed excellent command after walking multiple batters in each of his last two starts. Ryan's inconsistencies have left a question mark for the Twins' third rotation spot for the playoffs; however, Sunday's outing likely put him as the front runner to man the role behind Sonny Gray and Pablo Lopez. Ryan now owns a 4.31 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 191:33 K:BB in 156.2 innings and lines up for one final start against the Rockies.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in win

Ryan (10-8) allowed one run on three hits across six innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win over Texas. Aside from Corey Seager's solo homer in the fourth inning, Ryan was nearly untouchable in Friday's victory. It was his first appearance without walking a batter since June 27 and the first time he completed six innings since July 26. Despite the strong outing, he threw a season-low 74 pitches, though he still managed to force 14 whiffs. Ryan lowered his season ERA to 4.20 with a 166:27 K:BB through 24 starts. He's currently lined up to start in Cleveland next week.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Sharp in return

Ryan (groin) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Saturday. Ryan missed just over three weeks with a groin strain, but he looked solid in his return. He threw 51 of 80 pitches for strikes, suggesting he may not have much of a workload restriction, if any, going forward. He struggled prior to the injury, but he's at a passable 4.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 159:27 K:BB through 131 innings over 23 starts for the year. Ryan is projected for a rematch with the Rangers in Texas next week.
