Player Outlook
A third-round draft pick in 2019, Tyler Callihan reached the majors last season, debuting with Cincinnati at the end of April after a .303/.410/.528 start at Triple-A Louisville. In just his fourth MLB game, Callihan crashed into the wall at Truist Park in Atlanta and broke both bones in his left forearm, necessitating surgery. He was starting to ramp up in June but required a follow-up procedure in July, which ended his season. Callihan doesn't pack a ton of power, but he has twice reached 20 steals on the farm. He bats from the left side, has displayed respectable on-base skills and can play both second base and left field. The odds are against him making the big club out of spring training, as it seems more likely that he will have to prove his health to begin 2026. The Reds can easily justify using one of his remaining options and stashing him as minor-league depth until either injuries or performance force their hand.

  • Pirates' Tyler Callihan: Sent to Pittsburgh

The Pirates acquired Callihan from the Reds in exchange for Kyle Nicolas on Wednesday. Callihan made his MLB debut last season with Cincinnati, seeing action across four games. The 25-year-old utilityman recorded a single, an RBI and one strikeout across six plate appearances. Callihan will compete for a depth role in Pittsburgh after he showed impressive bat-to-ball skills at the Triple-A level in 2025, slashing .303/.410/.528 with four home runs, 12 RBI, 19 runs scored, six stolen bases and a 16:29 BB:K across 106 trips to the plate.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Fully cleared

Reds manager Terry Francona said Sunday that Callihan (forearm) has been fully cleared for all baseball activities during spring training, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports. Callihan has had an incredibly unlucky professional career when it comes to his health, with his latest setback coming in May, when he snapped his forearm trying to make a sliding catch in Atlanta. He's facing an uphill battle to make the team as a bench player coming out of spring training, with Will Benson and JJ Bleday seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order among Cincinnati's left-handed-hitting corner outfielders.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Likely done for season

Reds manager Terry Francona said July 10 that Callihan (forearm) recently had surgery on his left wrist and isn't expected to return from the 60-day injured list this season, Pat Brennan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Callihan had been on the shelf since May 6 after suffering two broken bones in his left forearm a day earlier, when he crashed into an outfield wall while pursing a flyball. He underwent surgery shortly after that incident, but he had been cleared to resume light baseball activities about a month later. Unfortunately for Callihan, his wrist had been bothering him during his ramp-up process, and after consulting with a doctor in New York, he elected to have another follow-up surgery. Callihan should be back to full health for spring training and will look to compete for a utility role with the Reds in camp.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Increasing activity

Callihan (forearm) played catch prior to Wednesday's game at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. This was the first time Callihan played catch since breaking his forearm six weeks ago. Doctors have given him various timelines for his recovery, but the 25-year-old outfielder, who is currently on the 60-day injured list, chooses to take it day-to-day. He was also given clearance to start lifting weights with his left arm.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: On mend from surgery

Callihan underwent surgery May 6 to repair two broken bones in his left forearm and isn't expected to resume workouts for 6-to-8 weeks, MLB.com reports. The Reds initially placed Callihan on the 10-day injured list the same day of his surgery before transferring him to the 60-day IL on May 9. Since he'll need to pick up some competitive at-bats during a minor-league rehab assignment once he's cleared to resume baseball activities, Callihan will most likely need more than minimum 60 days before returning from the IL. After getting his first big-league call-up April 30, Callihan went 1-for-6 with an RBI in four games before landing on the shelf.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Moves to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred Callihan (forearm) to the 60-day injured list Friday. Callihan isn't expected to rejoin the Reds until after the All-Star break after fracturing his left forearm Monday. This transaction opens a spot on the 40-man roster for Connor Joe, who was acquired Friday in a trade with the Padres.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Goes on IL with broken arm

The Reds placed Callihan on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a fractured left forearm. Callihan suffered the unfortunate injury when he slammed into the outfield wall while trying to make a catch Monday in Atlanta. According to Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News, the 24-year-old underwent surgery Tuesday and is expected to be shut down from baseball activities for 6-to-8 weeks, so he'll likely be sidelined until the latter stages of the regular season.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Lifted with arm injury

Callihan was removed from Monday's game against Atlanta due to an apparent left arm injury, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Callihan suffered the injury while attempting to make a catch at the wall and immediately exited the field after the play. Blake Dunn replaced Callihan in left field.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Logs first MLB hit

Callihan started in left field and went 1-for-2 with an RBI in Saturday's 11-6 loss to the Nationals. Callihan got the start against a right-hander and recorded his first hit in the majors. With Austin Hays (hamstring) on the injured list for the second time this season, the lefty-hitting Callihan could get an occasional start. Gavin Lux, who served as the designated hitter Saturday, should get most of the starts against righties in Hays' absence.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Receives first MLB call-up

The Reds recalled Callihan from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. He'll start in left field and bat ninth in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals. He'll join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for corner infielder Jeimer Candelario (spine), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 24-year-old had gotten off to a nice start to the season at Louisville, slashing .303/.410/.528 with four home runs and six stolen bases over 106 plate appearances. Callihan is capable of playing three infield spots as well as left field, but his left-handedness could work against him in earning meaningful playing time, as he won't represent a viable platoon mate for fellow lefty hitters Jake Fraley and Gavin Lux.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Sent to minor-league camp

The Reds optioned Callihan to Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Callihan was added to the 40-man roster in November, but given that he has only four games of experience above the Double-A level in addition to the fact that Cincinnati is well stocked in the infield, he never looked like a serious threat to break camp with the big club. The 24-year-old will likely spend the majority of the season at Louisville after slashing .271/.345/.413 with eight home runs and 21 steals over his 282 plate appearances at Double-A Chattanooga in 2024.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Added to 40-man roster

The Reds selected Callihan's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. Callihan has only played four games above Double-A, so he probably won't be up in the majors early this season, but he had a strong showing last year in the upper minors. A utility player who moves between second base, left field and first base, Callihan slashed .276/.359/.429 with nine home runs and 22 steals in 73 games, primarily at Double-A.

  • Reds' Tyler Callihan: Out following Tommy John surgery

Callihan is recovering from Tommy John surgery, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports. The 21-year-old infielder had an impressive start to the season with Low-A Daytona, hitting .299/.351/.437 with two home runs, five steals and a 13:8 K:BB in 99 plate appearances. He last played on June 1, so he presumably had the surgery in June. Given that he is a position player, Callihan could be ready for spring training next season.
