Geovany Soto: Becomes free agent
Soto (elbow) will become a free agent after the White Sox declined to exercise his 2018 club option.
Soto hit .190/.271/.405 in 13 games with the White Sox before elbow surgery ended his season in mid-May. He'll look to catch on elsewhere as catching depth, though he'll need to prove he's healthy before doing so. His recent injury issues could force him to settle for a minor-league deal.

White Sox's Geovany Soto: Still hopeful to play in 2017
Soto, who has been sidelined since mid-May following arthroscopic right elbow surgery, remains hopeful to return from the 60-day disabled list before the 2017 season ends, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.
Soto said he's 100 percent recovered from the procedure and has been rehabbing in Chicago so he can serve as a mentor to the team's relatively inexperienced healthy backstops, Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith. Even so, it's unclear how close Soto is to playing in games, and with the minor-league schedule set to end shortly, Soto could be forced to pick up at-bats in simulated games if the White Sox are serious about activating him before season's end. If he doesn't return in 2017, the 34-year-old Soto, who will be a free agent this winter, said he fully intends to keep playing next season.

White Sox's Geovany Soto: Lands on 60-day DL in advance of surgery
Soto (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list after it was announced that he will undergo arthroscopic elbow debridement surgery Tuesday.
Although the issue was initially tabbed as a bout of elbow inflammation, it seems that the ailment is much worse than that. The White Sox anticipate Soto to be out for at least 12 weeks, which would put his return date sometime in August at the earliest. Expect Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith to shoulder the load behind the plate until Soto returns.

Soto was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday after experiencing a recurrence of loose bodies in the elbow, the same issue that resulted in a trip to the DL in mid-April. The veteran backstop was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to soreness, a troubling sign considering he was on the DL last month with the same injury. Soto missed nine games in his previous DL stint and has appeared in just 13 games this season, where he's racked up a .190 average. Omar Narvaez will, once again, be in line for the lion's share of starts behind the plate.

This news of right elbow soreness is a bit concerning, as Soto was placed on the disabled list earlier this year with right elbow inflammation. It's unclear if today's scratch is simply precautionary or if the veteran backstop will be forced to miss additional time going forward. He'll be listed as day-to-day until more details become available.

Though Omar Narvaez will be behind the plate Sunday, it still looks as though Soto still has the edge in seeing the larger portion of starts in the timeshare, as Narvaez is batting just .174/.269/.174 through 26 plate appearances on the season.

Soto had been awarded the previous three starts behind the dish and churned out three homers and five RBI in those contests, so it appears he's vaulted ahead of Omar Narvaez on the depth chart at catcher for the time being. Considering the former Rookie of the Year has barely managed on-base percentages over .300 in the last four seasons, he probably won't warrant an extended look in shallower formats. Of course, he may make for a useful piece in AL-only or deeper two-catcher mixed leagues while he's dialed in at the plate.

Soto went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI in Thursday's 11-2 win over Detroit. The multi-homer game was his first since 2011 when he was with the Cubs.
Soto gave the White Sox some early breathing room when his three-run homer in the fourth inning gave the home team a 5-1 lead. He's expected to be the backup to Omar Narvaez this season, but should get a couple starts during each rotation. He was the catcher for most of the spring starts made by James Shields, who started Thursday, and Derek Holland.
