Erick Aybar: Hoping to return to MLB
Aybar is looking to make a comeback to the majors in 2019, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Aybar played in the Mexican League in 2018, hitting .291/.354/.401 with three homers and six steals across 43 games. The soon-to-be 35-year-old last played in the majors with the Padres in 2017, hitting .234/.300/.348 with seven homers and 11 stolen bases in 108 games.

Erick Aybar: Leaves Twins
Aybar left the Twins' camp Friday, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Friday was Aybar's opt-out date in his contract, and he appears to have exercised that option after being told Thursday that he wouldn't make the team's roster. Even with Jorge Polanco suspended for 80 games, the Twins prefer Eduardo Escobar as a fill-in shortstop, with Ehire Adrianza as the backup infielder. Aybar has some fantasy value in deeper leagues as he can chip in with the occasional steal, swiping 11 bags in 108 games last year, but at 34 and with a declining glove and a bat which recorded wRC+ figures of 78, 65, and 74 in the past three seasons, he's unlikely to generate much interest on the free-agent market.

Twins' Erick Aybar: Will not make Opening Day roster
Aybar was informed Thursday that he will not make the Twins' Opening Day roster, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Aybar, who was looking to lock down a reserve infield role in camp, will now have until Friday to decide if he wants to report to Triple-A Rochester or opt out of his contract and look elsewhere for a major-league opportunity. The 34-year-old is still a serviceable defender up the middle, but he hit just .234/.300/.348 across 270 plate appearances with the Padres in 2017.

Twins' Erick Aybar: Joins Twins on minor-league deal
Aybar signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Aybar spent the 2017 season with San Diego and posted a .234/.300/.348 slash line with seven home runs and 11 stolen bases in 370 plate appearances. The 34-year-old should serve as infield depth for the Twins, with third baseman Miguel Sano recovering from shin surgery and still in the midst of the league's investigation of the assault allegations made against him in December.

Padres' Erick Aybar: Swipes two bags Wednesday
Aybar went 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases in Wednesday's 13-7 loss to Arizona.
The 33-year-old is still getting it done on the basepaths, reaching double-digit steals for the eighth time in his 12-year career. Aybar has started 13 of the 16 games he has appeared in since returning from the disabled list Sept. 1, providing deep-league value over that span (.278 with a home run and three steals).

Padres' Erick Aybar: Seeing regular playing time
Aybar went 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-6 win over the Diamondbacks.
The veteran shortstop has started six of the Padres' last seven games despite the club being well out of contention. Aybar has gone 8-for-26 with three extra-base hits over that span, giving him deep-league appeal as long as he continues to see regular playing time.

Aybar got the nod at short Sunday, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 6-4 win over the Dodgers.
Aybar was able to get in the starting lineup on consecutive days due to Saturday's doubleheader and Cory Spangenberg's rest day on Sunday; he went 4-for-8 over that span. The majority of the 33-year-old's .234/.302/.364 slash line was accumulated as a starter at the beginning of the season, but he will likely be limited to a start or two per week as a backup infielder down the stretch.

Aybar was expected to see a reduced role in the final month of the season after being reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Friday, but he'll earn a third consecutive start Monday after providing a two-run home run a day earlier. Yangervis Solarte has been a fixture in the lineup of late as a roving utility man, so in order to clear a regular spot for him, one of Aybar, second baseman Carlos Asuaje and third baseman Cory Spangenberg will likely sit out every contest. It will be Asuaje's turn to take a seat Monday, allowing Aybar to maintain his spot in the starting nine.

Padres' Erick Aybar: Used off bench Friday
Aybar was used as a pinch hitter Friday, failing to reach base in a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers.
It was the veteran shortstop's first action since going on the disabled list with a broken foot July 22. The Padres' infield has become a little more crowded since Aybar was sidelined, so he will likely be used sparingly as the club takes a look at younger options in the final month of the season.

It isn't clear whether Aybar is ready for game action as of yet, or if the club made this move since keeping the shortstop on the disabled list serves no real purpose now that rosters have expanded. He's been out since late July after fracturing his foot, and could remain sidelined if it still needs time to recover.

It appears that Aybar will be sidelined for quite some time after fouling a ball off his foot during Friday's game. Initial reports suggest that the shortstop will likely miss the remainder of the season, though he could return in September in a best-case scenario. The veteran has responded with a pair of home runs in three starts over the Padres' last four games. Overall, the 33-year-old has been disappointing (.221/.295/.354) at the plate, but a light power/speed combo (six homers and six steals) gives him value in very deep fantasy leagues while he's seeing semi-regular starts.
