Marlins' Mike Aviles: Sluggish in limited opportunities
Aviles finished the season with a batting average of .235 to go with one home run and eight RBI.
Aviles struggled to find playing time in 2017, appearing in only 36 games after being called up from Triple-A New Orleans in late July. In the last 30 games of the season, Aviles batted .161 in 31 at-bats, and he failed to record an extra-base hit. Based on this poor performance, it's unlikely that his role would change much heading into next season.

Marlins' Mike Aviles: Slugs pinch-hit homer Friday
Aviles hit for Dustin McGowan in the seventh inning Friday and blasted a two-run homer in a 7-4 win over the Reds.
It was the veteran utility infielder's first big-league home run of the year, as he needed only seven games with Miami to match his total in 55 games this season with Triple-A New Orleans. Aviles is now slashing .313/.389/.500 with the Marlins as he sees semi-regular playing time with J.T. Riddle (shoulder) and Martin Prado (knee) both sidelined.

Marlins' Mike Aviles: Contract purchased from Triple-A
Aviles' contract was purchased from Triple-A New Orleans and he is starting at shortstop and hitting eighth Tuesday in Texas, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
J.T. Riddle was placed on the 10-day DL with biceps tendinitis as a corresponding move, so Aviles figures to see time at shortstop while backup Miguel Rojas nurses a shoulder injury. Aviles, a 36-year-old veteran, was hitting .292/.326/.376 with one home run in 196 plate appearances at Triple-A.

Marlins' Mike Aviles: In line for promotion
The Marlins are expected to select Aviles' contract from Triple-A New Orleans prior to Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
With J.T. Riddle (shoulder) expected to land on the disabled list and Miguel Rojas (shoulder) day-to-day, the Marlins are getting dangerously low on depth in the middle infield, so Aviles will move back to the big leagues to provide some relief. Rojas is scheduled to visit a doctor Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury, but since it's a good possibility Rojas will be sidelined later in the evening, Aviles could enter the lineup right away. The veteran utility man is batting .292/.326/.376 over 196 plate appearances with New Orleans this season.

Marlins' Mike Aviles: Dumped from 40-man roster
The Marlins designated Aviles for assignment Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Aviles was added to the 40-man roster last weekend largely as a result of his ability to play all over the diamond and in the outfield, but the 36-year-old didn't stick around with the Marlins for long after a younger, higher-upside utility option in Christian Colon became available via waivers. The Marlins are still hoping to stash Aviles at Triple-A New Orleans if he goes unclaimed, but the veteran will face a more difficult path to return to the big club now that he no longer occupies a 40-man spot.

Marlins' Mike Aviles: Heads to majors Friday
Aviles had his contract purchased from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.
Aviles hasn't been with the Marlins organization for very long, but with the big-league club in need of infield depth, the veteran utility man was just what the doctor ordered. He'll likely fill a reserve role upon his return to the big leagues, but his versatility and experience could land him a decent amount of playing time until Miami's regulars are back in commission.
