Sung-Mun Song is looking to follow his former Kiwoom Heroes teammates Ha-Seong Kim, Jung Hoo Lee and Hyeseong Kim this winter by making the leap to MLB. Song didn't look like a player with an MLB future until recently, recording a .690 OPS through the end of 2023, his age-26 season. Since then, he's recorded an OPS north of .900 for two straight seasons, hitting well over .300 both years while averaging 22.5 homers and 23 steals. He combines pretty good power with good contact ability as well, with a 14.3 K% over the last two seasons. Combine that with his ability to play a decent third base and you get a player who could at least get a shot at the large side of a platoon at the major-league level. Note that Lee's career MLB OPS is down 281 points from his peak KBO mark, while Ha-Seong Kim's is down 220 points from his KBO best, however. Applying the same math to Song would put his OPS somewhere between .646 and .707, which suggests he might be stuck with a bench role.

  • Padres' Sung-Mun Song: Could open season on IL

    Song (oblique) has yet to resume swinging a bat and hasn't been cleared to participate in fielding drills, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The Padres have made it clear that they intend to slow play Song's recovery in an effort to ensure the issue doesn't pop up again later this season. "We've got to play that injury really cautious," stated manager Craig Stammen. "Because he had it, came back, got it again. It's just one of those things -- we can't have that happen the whole year. We've got to nip it in the bud right now." Cassavell points out that Opening Day is only two weeks away, and the fact that Song has only received treatment since aggravating the oblique injury is cause for concern.

    Song was removed from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Mariners with right oblique tightness, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Manager Craig Stammen said after Thursday's contest that Song's removal was precautionary, as the Padres didn't want to risk further damage to the 29-year-old's oblique, which he originally injured in January. Song may take a break from Cactus League action for a couple days, but his Opening Day availability doesn't currently seem to be at risk.

    Song is slated to make his Cactus League debut in the coming days after recovering from an oblique injury he suffered while taking batting practice in January, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Song took his first live batting practice Thursday and said through an interpreter that he's "just waiting for a green light to play in a game." After primarily playing third base in Korea, Song is slated to fill a utility role with the Padres, seeing action at shortstop, second base and left field in addition to the hot corner.
