Ruiz slashed .216/.313/.352 with eight doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI in 145 plate appearances across 54 games in 2017.
The elements of the veteran backstop's slash line were among the lowest of his 12 seasons, but he served his main purpose of providing an occasional off day for Mike Zunino. The Mariners didn't have many designs on Ruiz serving as an offensive force in what had been expected to be sporadic playing time coming into the season. Ruiz could opt to call it a career rather than return for what would be his age-39 season.

Mariners' Carlos Ruiz: Homers for second straight start Sunday
Ruiz went 2-for-3 with a double, a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 10-2 win over the Athletics.
Facing Santiago Casilla, the veteran backstop smacked his third homer of the season and his second in as many starts. Ruiz continues to see sporadic playing time behind Mike Zunino, but he's provided some decent pop with 11 extra-base hits (eight doubles, three homers) in limited opportunities this season.

Ruiz went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in Monday's 6-4 win over the Rangers.
The veteran backstop's average had dipped as low as .119 as late as May 18, but Ruiz has slashed .314/.407/.471 with five doubles, a homer, six walks and seven runs in 59 plate appearances since. He's a somewhat appealing option when Mike Zunino requires a day off.

Ruiz went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Athletics.
The veteran catcher picked it up at the plate in June by producing a .294/.400/.588 line, but Sunday's hits were his first in three July starts. Ruiz had hit under .250 just twice in 13 major-league seasons prior to the 2017 campaign, so it was likely that he'd eventually snap out of his early-season funk -- one that saw his average dip as low as .111. The 38-year-old will continue to see periodic starts in Mike Zunino's stead, but the latter's solid play and Ruiz's advanced age will likely conspire to keep his playing time fairly scarce in the second half of the season.

Ruiz slashed .294/.400/.588 across 17 at-bats in June.
Opportunities are still limited with starting catcher Mike Zunino revitalized and healthy, but Ruiz found a tiny bit of success in June after his average sat below the Mendoza Line throughout May. The veteran catcher is slashing .209/.316/.343 in just 67 at-bats and only gets the starting nod every few games to give Zunino an off day.

Ruiz smacked a solo home run in his only plate appearance during Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Twins.
Ruiz made it back-to-back round trippers for the Mariners in the third when he launched a 422-foot shot to left immediately following fellow backstop Mike Zunino's solo blast. The 38-year-old has provided solid offense throughout his career, although he's found success at the plate hard to come by thus far in a Seattle uniform. Ruiz could be starting to snap out of his funk, however, as he's hit safely in five of his last eight contests overall, raising his average 86 points to .204 over that span in the process.

Ruiz went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Red Sox.
The three-hit effort was Ruiz's first of the season and only his second multi-hit game of the year in 60 plate appearances. Chooch is hitting just .180 on the season with no home runs and six RBI. He's unlikely to see consistent at-bats as the current backup to Mike Zunino.

With the Mariners bringing Mike Zunino back from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the week, Ruiz has been stuck on the bench for the previous two games and looks like he'll resume serving in a backup capacity for the time being. It was take another prolonged cold spell from Zunino before Ruiz sees regular at-bats again.

The veteran backstop drew the start for Mike Zunino and rapped out his first pair of hits on the season. It was only Ruiz's second start, but per manager Scott Servais' previous statements, he's scheduled to see an above-average amount of playing time for a backup catcher this season. The 38-year-old sports a serviceable .266/.352/.393 line over his long career and is therefore expected to provide solid offensive production whenever he's in the lineup.
