  • Robinson Cano: Headed to Mexico

Cano signed a contract with the Diablos Rojos del Mexico of the Mexican Baseball League on Friday. Cano is now 41 but isn't ready to retire just yet. The 17-year major-league veteran last saw action in the big leagues in 2022, when he played in 33 games for three different teams.

  • Robinson Cano: Playing for D.R. in WBC

Cano is on the roster for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Cano might not see much action for the stacked D.R. squad, but he could potentially do some late-game pinch hitting against righties. The 40-year-old played in 33 games for three different teams in 2022, managing just a .373 OPS. Cano is a free agent but hasn't given any indication that he's ready for retirement.

  • Robinson Cano: Officially hits free agency

Cano elected free agency after being outrighted by Atlanta on Thursday. The 39-year-old was designated for assignment earlier this week, and it's hardly a surprise he'll be returning to the open market. Cano appeared in only nine games during his brief stint in Atlanta and went 4-for-26 with a double, a walk and a run. The veteran has a .373 OPS across 33 games in his three big-league stops this year, so he seems unlikely to receive a look from another team.

  • Braves' Robinson Cano: Time over in Atlanta

Atlanta designated Cano for assignment Monday. Cano recently lost hold of his role as Atlanta's primary second baseman, and his status as a left-handed hitter with limited defensive utility made him an ill fit in a bench role. As a result, Atlanta opted to replace him with Ehire Adrianza, who was acquired from the Nationals on Monday and is a more traditional fit for a utility role. Given that he's now been let go by three teams this season after slashing a collective .150/.183/.190 with a career-worst 24 percent strikeout rate over 104 plate appearances in the majors, the 39-year-old Cano's prolific run in the big leagues could be over.

  • Braves' Robinson Cano: Remains on bench

Cano is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. The 39-year-old has started only three of eight games coming out of the All-Star break, and he's on the bench again Sunday despite Arizona sending out righty Merrill Kelly. Cano has a .154/.185/.192 slash line through nine games for Atlanta. Orlando Arcia will receive another start at the keystone and appears to be the favorite for starts going forward.

Cano (head) isn't starting Saturday against the Angels, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. • Braves' Robinson Cano: On bench Friday

Cano will sit Friday against the Nationals. Cano started three of the first four games after his contract was selected Monday, going 3-for-10 at the plate, but he'll sit with left-hander Patrick Corbin on the mound for Washington. Orlando Arcia will be the second baseman this time around.

  • Braves' Robinson Cano: Takes seat Tuesday

Cano is on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Mets. Lefty David Peterson starts for the Mets, so Cano is out of the lineup. The veteran Cano will likely get plenty of at-bats with his new team as long as he's performing, but he could often find himself on the bench against southpaw starters. Orlando Arcia gets the start at second base.

  • Braves' Robinson Cano: Two hits in team debut

Cano went 2-for-3 with a pair of base hits Monday in Atlanta's 4-1 loss to the Mets. After Atlanta acquired him from San Diego on Sunday, Cano quickly joined the big club and entered the starting lineup for the series opener against one of his former teams. Cano got the job done while batting out of the ninth spot and should settle in as Atlanta's primary second baseman while Ozzie Albies (foot) remains on the 60-day injured list. The righty-hitting Orlando Arcia could spell the lefty-hitting Cano at the keystone when Atlanta opposes left-handed pitchers.

  • Braves' Robinson Cano: Contract officially selected

Atlanta selected Cano's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. Cano will join Atlanta ahead of their three-game series against the Mets after he was acquired from the Padres via trade Sunday. Prior to the trade, Cano had slashed .333/.375/.479 with three home runs in 21 games at Triple-A El Paso. Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the lefty-hitting Cano is expected to fill the large side of a platoon at second base, with the righty-hitting Orlando Arcia entering the lineup versus left-handed pitching.

The 39-year-old appeared in 21 games at Triple-A El Paso over the last month and slashed .333/.375/.479 with three homers, 20 runs and 20 RBI. • Robinson Cano: Officially parts ways with Padres

Cano elected free agency after being optioned to Triple-A El Paso by the Padres on Thursday. Cano spent the past three weeks in San Diego, and he finished his time with the team in the midst of an 0-for-20 slump. The 39-year-old has played in 24 games this season between the Mets and Padres, and he has a .149/.182/.189 slash line and 27.3 percent strikeout rate, which would be the worst strikeout rate of his MLB career by over 10 percentage points. Cano may be hard pressed to receive another big-league opportunity this year if he's unwilling to take a minor-league deal.
