Glen Perkins: Will hang up cleats
General manager Thad Levine said Perkins has decided to retire, Brandon Warne of The Athletic Minnesota reports.
The 34-year-old Minnesota native will apparently hang up his cleats after 12 seasons with the Twins. Perkins excelled as a late-inning arm for Minnesota from 2011-15, compiling a 2.84 ERA , 1.11 WHIP and 340:73 K:BB across 313.1 innings while being named an All-Star three times. He also racked up 120 saves over that five-year stretch, which ranks third on the Twins' all-time list. The 34-year-old was hindered by a nagging shoulder injury over the last two seasons, limiting him to just 7.2 big-league innings.

Glen Perkins: Poised to become free agent
The Twins informed Perkins on Wednesday that the team won't exercise its option for Perkins' contract for the 2018 season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Perkins has dealt with a severe shoulder injury over the last two seasons. As a result, he's pitched just 7.2 innings across 10 games in that time. Over said stretch he's allowed eight runs on 13 hits and six walks. With the Twins opting to not pick up his option, Perkins, who'd thrown for an ERA of 3.65 or below in each of the five seasons prior to his injury, will become a free agent. However, because Perkins is 34 years old and coming off a significant injury, his fantasy value is rather limited.

Twins' Glen Perkins: Reinstated from disabled list Thursday
Perkins (shoulder) was activated prior to Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against Cleveland, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports.
Perkins is making his return to the mound after landing on the disabled list in mid-April of 2016. The left-hander has suffered multiple setbacks following labrum surgery, but appears to be at full health after appearing in six rehab outings over the course of the last month. His most recent appearance came Aug. 14 with Double-A Chattanooga, tossing a scoreless inning while adding in two strikeouts. Moving forward, Perkins figures to work his way back into high-leverage situations, although manager Paul Molitor may ease him along in hopes of keeping the 34-year-old in good condition. Since 2011, Perkins has been a key reliever for the Twins, and performed well during his role as the closer from 2013-2015, earning 30-plus saves in each of those seasons.

Twins' Glen Perkins: Nearing return
Perkins (shoulder) pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts during his rehab appearance with Double-A Chattanooga on Monday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
It is likely the final rehab appearance for Perkins, as the 30-day rehab window closes next Monday. Perkins allowed five runs and five walks with 10 strikeouts over 7.1 innings across eight rehab appearances at three levels. The 34-year-old has been dealing with shoulder issues after undergoing labrum surgery last year and hasn't pitched in the majors since April 2016.

Twins' Glen Perkins: Moving rehab assignment to Double-A
Perkins (shoulder) is scheduled to report to Double-A Chattanooga on Thursday and make three appearances with the club before potentially being activated from the 60-day disabled list next week, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Perkins seems to be nearing the final stage of his lengthy rehab and recovery from major surgery on his throwing shoulder, which he underwent 13 and a half months ago. The 34-year-old has already made five rehab appearances between the Twins' rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate and High-A Fort Myers, and he will toss an extended bullpen session Monday before joining Chattanooga. After pitching Thursday for Chattanooga, Perkins is in line to make back-to-back appearances Sunday and Monday. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Twins, though it's unclear if the three-time All-Star would have a key late-inning role awaiting him, even with the recent trade of closer Brandon Kintzler leaving the back of the bullpen quite unsettled.

Twins' Glen Perkins: Touches 90 mph in rehab appearance
Perkins (shoulder) threw eight pitches in a one-innig rehab appearance in the Gulf Coast League on Saturday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports.
The most impressive news is that Perkins touched 90 miles per hour on the radar gun and fanned two batters. It seems like the left-hander held up well and is looking like his old self, although given his extensive injury history, the Twins will likely take things slowly as he works his way back to the major-league bullpen.

After getting through Friday's bullpen session unscathed, Perkins is expected to face live hitters Wednesday. If all goes well, he could be cleared to head out on a rehab assignment shortly thereafter. It's unclear how long that assignment would be, although given how fragile he's proven to be during his rehab, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Twins take a cautious approach.

Manager Paul Molitor said Perkins (shoulder, biceps) could resume throwing after he receives a cortisone shot, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
The cortisone could come as soon as Tuesday, according to Molitor, but it doesn't help to be hopeful with Perkins, who was progressing in his shoulder rehabilitation before being shut down due to biceps tendinitis. It's still a long road back for the reliever, who hasn't pitched in the majors since April of 2016.

Perkins (shoulder) was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis and will be shut down from throwing for a week after receiving a PRP injection, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
It's another tough break for the 34-year-old, who hasn't appeared in a game since last April due to ongoing shoulder issues. Perkins was nearing a rehab assignment before suffering this latest setback, and it remains unclear when he'll be able to head out on that assignment. With Brandon Kintzler maintaining a firm grasp on the ninth inning for the Twins, the team will likely continue to move Perkins along slowly.

Apparently Perkins was sitting between 85-89 mph with his fastball, which is down from last season and well down from his mid-90s peak from a few years ago. It's expected that Perkins will begin a rehab assignment in the near future, but the diminished stuff along with the emergence of Brandon Kintzler in the closer role could result in Perkins working in the middle innings initially upon activation.

Perkins will throw one more bullpen session Tuesday before getting ready to grind against live hitters at extended spring. Assuming all goes as well as Friday's bullpen session did, Perkins will be able to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment and then make his return to the Twins bullpen in mid June.
