Jonathan Broxton: Cut loose by Cardinals
Broxton was released by the Cardinals, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Broxton has been nothing short of awful this season, with Tuesday's debacle raising his ERA to 6.89 and his WHIP to 2.17. He has a lot of major-league experience to his name, but he's three years removed from his best form, which could harm his chances of latching on with a new team in free agency.

Cardinals' Jonathan Broxton: Touched up in ninth Tuesday
Broxton gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk over an inning in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers. He struck out two.
Following 3.2 innings of scoreless relief by bullpen mates John Brebbia, Brett Cecil and Kevin Siegrist, Broxton got himself into trouble in the ninth and allowed the Dodgers' final pair of runs on the evening. The 32-year-old looked like he might be hitting his stride when he posted a seven-appearance scoreless streak between April 27 and May 16, but he's given up five earned runs over the 3.2 innings encompassing his subsequent six outings while raising his ERA from 5.25 to 6.89.

Cardinals' Jonathan Broxton: Takes first loss of season Tuesday
Broxton (0-1) gave up an earned run on a hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Dodgers. He also recorded a strikeout.
Brought on in the 13th in relief of closer Seung-Hwan Oh, Broxton breezed through Austin Barnes and Yasiel Puig before issuing a two-out walk to Kike Hernandez. He then promptly surrendered a double to Logan Forsythe on a 1-1 pitch, ending the 13-inning marathon. It was the second stumble for Broxton over his last three outings, as he'd given up two earned runs to the Giants without getting an out on May 19 as well. The 32-year-old has put together multiple stretches of scoreless efforts, but has also given up multiple earned runs in four of the five outings in which he's been scored upon. That's led to an unsightly 6.75 ERA and 2.18 WHIP over 7.2 innings, despite the fact that Broxton has also blanked opponents in 12 other appearances.

Cardinals' Jonathan Broxton: Third straight scoreless outing Friday
Broxton struck out one and gave up two hits over a scoreless eighth inning in Friday's 10-0 win over the Braves.
The 32-year-old right-hander now has three consecutive one-inning, two-hit, scoreless appearances, as he continues to pitch to contact but mostly avoids disaster. Broxton had surrendered fewer hits than innings pitched in five straight seasons coming into this season, but he's now yielded 14 hits over 8.2 frames in 2017, leading to an unsightly 2.31 WHIP. However, following a rough April 10 outing against the Nationals in which he gave up three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, Broxton has turned in scoreless efforts in six of his seven subsequent trips to the mound.

Cardinals' Jonathan Broxton: Implodes in ninth Sunday
Broxton failed to record an out in the ninth inning in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Brewers, giving up two hits and two earned runs.
Charged with protecting a relatively comfortable 6-2 lead, the right-hander got matters off on the wrong foot by surrendering a solo home run to Manny Pina and an infield single to Keon Broxton. That was enough to bring on Seung Hwan Oh, who yielded a single to Jonathan Villar that placed another run on Broxton's ledger, though he ultimately closed it out. The veteran reliever had put together three straight scoreless outings following a pair of rough appearances against the Reds and Nationals, so Sunday's outcome represented a setback. Broxton now has an 11.12 ERA and 2.47 WHIP along with an unsightly 5:6 K:BB over his first 5.2 innings.

Cardinals' Jonathan Broxton: Strong ninth inning Saturday
Broxton pitched a scoreless inning in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Yankees, surrendering one hit and uncorking a wild pitch while recording two strikeouts.
The veteran right-hander worked around a single to Brett Gardner and a wild pitch that advanced him to second, disposing of Aaron Hicks and Chris Carter on swinging strikeouts to close out the frame. It was a nice bounce-back performance for Broxton, who'd surrendered five earned runs over 1.2 innings across his previous two trips to the mound. While his ERA still sits at 12.27, perhaps Saturday's outing could be the start of a turnaround.
