Phil Hughes: Officially retires
Hughes announced his retirement Sunday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Hughes hasn't played since August of 2018, and he officially brought his career to an end Sunday. The right-hander spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Yankees, Twins and Padres, posting a 4.52 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 1,040 strikeouts over 290 appearances.

Phil Hughes: Cut loose by San Diego
The Padres released Hughes on Wednesday.
In addition to the money remaining on his contract for 2018, Hughes was due a $13.2 million base salary in 2019, so it was no surprise the Padres couldn't find any takers for him via trade or waiver claim after he was designated for assignment last week. The Padres ultimately elected to wash their hands of Hughes altogether, allowing the 32-year-old righty to explore his options elsewhere. The acquisition of Hughes was accompanied by cash and a draft pick from Minnesota in May (a competitive balance round B pick), so the Padres essentially bought a pick in exchange for taking on a portion of Hughes' remaining contract from the Twins. Given that he's supplied a 6.34 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 23 appearances (two starts) this season between San Diego and Minnesota, Hughes will likely have to settle for a minor-league contract if he chooses to keep his career going.

Padres' Phil Hughes: Designated for assignment
Hughes was designated for assignment by San Diego on Friday.
Hughes was cast off the roster in order to make room for Jacob Nix, who will be making his major-league debut against the Phillies on Friday. Across 16 appearances with the Padres this year, Hughes logged a 6.10 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with a 24:5 K:BB in 20.1 innings of relief.

Padres' Phil Hughes: Activated from DL
Hughes (back) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Friday.
Hughes will be available out of the Padres' bullpen for Friday's tilt in Arizona after missing the past couple weeks due to a right rhomboid strain. He's appeared in seven games for San Diego this year since being picked up from Minnesota, logging a pedestrian 6.23 ERA and 1.85 WHIP with the Padres. Look for him to serve in low-leverage situations.

Padres' Phil Hughes: Lands on DL
Hughes was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a right rhomboid strain.
Hughes was tagged for three runs on six hits across two innings in his most recent relief appearance, and this could help explain his struggles. It's unclear how long Hughes will be sidelined at this point, though he'll be eligible to return July 1 should he ultimately prove ready. Phil Maton was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding move.

Padres' Phil Hughes: Set for bullpen role
Hughes will be available for Tuesday's game against the Marlins and is slated to work out of the bullpen initially, Jay Paris of MLB.com reports.
The Padres will have a temporary opening in the rotation Friday against the Reds in the event Joey Lucchesi (hip) isn't able to return from the 10-day disabled list, but it appears Hughes will have to prove himself as a long reliever before getting a look in the rotation. Prior to being traded away by the Twins on Sunday, Hughes made seven appearances (two starts) for Minnesota, surrendering nine runs on 14 hits and five walks over 12 innings.

Padres' Phil Hughes: Dealt to Padres
Hughes was traded to the Padres on Sunday in exchange for minor-league catcher Janigson Villalobos, cash considerations and the 74th pick in the 2018 first-year player draft.
The Twins are expected to cover most of Hughes' salary for 2018 and about half of the $13.2 million he's owed for 2019, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Hughes made seven appearances (including two starts) for the Twins this season, posting a 6.75 ERA and 8:5 K:BB over 12 innings. The Padres have a need for depth at the back end of their rotation, but it's unclear if the team intends to audition Hughes for a starting role or use him as a long man out of the bullpen.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Designated for assignment
Hughes was designated for assignment by the Twins on Monday, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Hughes will head to the waiver wire after being designated for assignment. Manager Paul Molitor stated that Hughes wasn't asked about a minor-league assignment, meaning Hughes will likely end up with another team in the near future if he garners any interest. The 31-year-old has failed to be effective out of the bullpen this season, accruing a 6.75 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 12 innings.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Demoted to bullpen Monday
Hughes is moving to the bullpen, the team announced Monday.
The veteran has struggled mightily this season, failing to escape the fourth inning in either of his two starts. With Hughes in the midst of a steep decline, the Twins will move him to the bullpen to presumably work in long relief. It's unclear if he'll get another chance to pitch in the rotation later this season. Fernando Romero will take his place in the rotation for now.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Next start in jeopardy
Hughes is no longer listed as the Twins' starter Wednesday against Toronto, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Hughes has done little to demand another opportunity, failing to get out of the fourth inning in each of his first two starts this season. He's struck out five while walking four through seven innings, and his ERA sits at 7.71 after coming in at 5.95 and 5.87 the last two seasons. The veteran no longer looks like a major-league starter, so the Twins may elect to move on, with Matt Magill potentially being an option for Wednesday.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Roughed up again in second start of season
Hughes got a no-decision in Minnesota's 15-9 loss to Cincinnati on Friday, giving up four earned runs on five hits over 3.2 innings, striking out three and walking two.
It was the second straight rough outing for Hughes since he was activated from the disabled list after recovering from an oblique injury, and he's now got a 7.71 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP through just seven innings of work. Hughes had a 5.87 ERA in 53.2 innings last year and a 5.95 mark in 59 innings in 2016, so there's not much in his recent history to suggest he'll be a consistent fantasy contributor this season. He'll look to get on track in his next start against the Blue Jays on May 2.
