Mike Pelfrey: Retires from baseball
Pelfrey has retired and will join Newman University as an assistant baseball coach in 2018, Wayne Cavidi of NCAA.com reports.
The retirement brings an end to Pelfrey's 12-year major-league career. He recorded a 4.68 ERA in 1,476.1 innings and posted a 68-103 record.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Shellacked in Friday's loss
Pelfrey (3-12) was knocked around Friday in a loss to the Indians, lasting just 2.2 innings while allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on six hits and six walks. He struck out two.
Simply put, nothing went the veteran's way Friday night. Just over half his pitches went for strikes, a fielding error left him on the mound long enough to serve up a homer, and he managed to produce a negative game score. Pelfrey will put this start in the rearview mirror as he gears up for 2018 with a 5.93 ERA and a 1.9 HR/9 on his 2017 season ledger.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Will draw start Friday
Pelfrey will start Friday's game against the Indians, William Kosileski of MLB.com reports.
Pelfrey will reenter the rotation for the the first time since Sept. 7, effectively taking the spot of Lucas Giolito, who was shut down for the season due to workload concerns. Given that he hasn't tossed more than 2.1 innings in any of his last four appearances out of the bullpen, Pelfrey's pitch count could be capped Friday, but even if that's not the case, the veteran right-hander isn't a good bet to deliver much value as a streaming option or as a DFS play. He's holding down a 5.52 ERA and 1.51 WHIP across 117.1 frames on the campaign.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Heading back to bullpen
Pelfrey will return to the bullpen this week with the White Sox naming Dylan Covey as their starter for Tuesday's game against the Royals, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
After Carlos Rodon was surprisingly shut down for the season last week due to left shoulder inflammation, Pelfrey was called upon to make a spot start in his stead and didn't offer much to write home about, surrendering seven runs on eight hits (including three home runs) and three walks over four innings in a loss to the Indians. Since the 33-year-old is set to become a free agent this winter and doesn't factor into the White Sox's long-term plans, the team will instead see if the less experienced, but higher-ceiling Covey can offer an upgrade at the back end of the rotation. Expect any appearances Pelfrey makes over the final few weeks of the season to come as a mop-up man in long relief.

Pelfrey (3-11) was shelled for seven runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts over four innings while taking the loss Thursday against the Indians.
Pelfrey got off to a terrible start, surrendering a triple, an RBI double, a walk and a three-run homer to his first four batters faced. He gave up another long ball to begin the second inning and allowed a third home run in the third. The veteran right-hander was just filling in for Carlos Rodon (shoulder) and isn't expected to get another turn in the rotation unless another injury crops up.

Carlos Rodon (shoulder) was scratched and Pelfrey will toe the rubber in his absence. Pelfrey hasn't thrown more than 52 pitches in an appearance over the past three weeks, so it will essentially be a bullpen game for Chicago.

Pelfrey has struggled as a starter this year -- compiling an unsightly 5.09 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 19 starts (93.1 innings) -- prompting the White Sox to shift him to the bullpen as they give youngster Reynaldo Lopez a chance in the rotation. Pelfrey owns an awful 59:47 K:BB this season, so even if he significantly drops his ERA as a reliever, he won't offer much fantasy intrigue.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Drops to 3-10 with loss to Boston
Pelfrey (3-10) allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out just two batters through 5.2 innings during Sunday's loss to the Red Sox.
The veteran righty has now surrendered 17 runs through 16.1 innings over his past three starts and is up to a 5.31 ERA and 1.51 WHIP for the campaign. His 5.6 K/9 isn't moving the fantasy needle, either. In ripe matchups, Pelfrey could be utilized as a streaming option or low-priced flier in daily contests, but even then, expectations should be kept in check. However, pay attention to the White Sox's transactions this week. Reynaldo Lopez could be called up from Triple-A Charlotte to start Friday. If so, someone currently in the rotation may be removed, and Pelfrey makes the most sense, schedule-wise. If he remains in the rotation, his next turn lines up to face the Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field this coming weekend.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Tires in sixth inning
Pelfrey (3-9) allowed six runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batsman to take his ninth loss of the season in Tuesday's defeat to the Blue Jays.
Pelfrey has gone seven consecutive starts without a win, posting a 6.80 ERA and failing to last six innings in any of those starts. He's allowed 10 home runs over the last 33.1 innings as a starter. Those are pretty ugly numbers, and the organization's young prospects can't do much worse. Now that the White Sox have made a hard pivot to 2018, guys like Pelfrey have a short shelf life. If he makes his next scheduled start, Pelfrey will be on the bump Sunday on the road against Boston.

Pelfrey warmed up in the bullpen Saturday two days after throwing 45 pitches in a start, Paul Skrbina of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Pelfrey said it was his normal between-starts throwing day and that he was preparing in case the White Sox needed him to pitch in relief. However, seeing one of Chicago's starting pitchers warm up in the bullpen fueled speculation that the White Sox are preparing to call up one or more of their young starting prospects from Triple-A Charlotte. If not in time for Pelfrey's next scheduled start Tuesday, Chicago could soon call up Reynaldo Lopez or Lucas Giolito -- or both.

Pelfrey (3-8) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings during Thursday's loss to the Cubs.
Pelfrey had allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his previous 11 starts to post a serviceable 3.93 ERA and 7.2 K/9. He wasn't quite as sharp Thursday, and with a 5.51 FIP for the campaign, fantasy expectations should probably remain in check. Outside of the deepest settings, Pelfrey is likely only worth utilizing as a streaming option or low-priced flier in daily contests when facing a weak opponent. The veteran righty projects to face the Blue Jays at Guaranteed Rate Field in his next start.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Walks six in no-decision
Pelfrey allowed one run on two hits and six walks while striking out four over five-plus innings in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Royals.
Pelfrey pitched five scoreless innings before walking the first batter he faced in the sixth inning, turning over Chicago's 2-0 lead to David Holmberg, who allowed three home runs in the sixth inning. The White Sox have lost eight straight and have signaled their pivot toward next year when Jose Quintana was traded and Yoan Moncada was called up. Part of the pivot means moving on from Pelfrey, who has pitched well at times but is taking important developmental innings from young prospects like Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito and Carson Fulmer.

White Sox's Mike Pelfrey: Lasts just 4.2 innings against Mariners
Pelfrey allowed just two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters through only 4.2 innings during Saturday's loss to Seattle. He didn't factor into the decision.
With a 4.64 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 5.9 K/9, Pelfrey isn't moving the fantasy needle in the majority of settings. His 5.39 FIP suggests there might even be rougher times ahead, too. The White Sox are also likely to unload assets from their roster leading into the trade deadline, so it's probably best to continue avoiding Pelfrey outside of the deepest leagues. He projects to make his next start against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
