NASCAR playoffs at Las Vegas results: Joey Logano earns improbable Championship 4 spot with fuel mileage win

On a day full of improbable turns of events in the NASCAR playoffs, Joey Logano executed in a fuel-mileage race to the finish, passing Daniel Suarez with five laps to go and then holding off Christopher Bell to win the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, putting him in the Championship 4 with his third win of the 2024 season. Logano's victory came only one week after he had been eliminated from the playoffs by the checkered flag at the Charlotte Roval, only to be put back in the Round of 8 after Alex Bowman's team failed post-race tech inspection.

While many of the leaders chose to pit with just under 40 laps to go, Logano was among a group of cars that elected to try and save fuel to the finish and build enough of a gap that Bell and other cars with a full tank of fuel and fresh tires could not pass them. While Logano spent much of the final run in second, he turned up the wick in the final laps, passing Daniel Suarez with assistance from teammate Ryan Blaney, who also served as a pick that prevented Bell from catching him on the final lap.

South Point 400 unofficial results

  1. #22 - Joey Logano
  2. #20 - Christopher Bell
  3. #99 - Daniel Suarez
  4. #24 - William Byron
  5. #48 - Alex Bowman
  6. #19 - Martin Truex Jr.
  7. #1 - Ross Chastain
  8. #11 - Denny Hamlin
  9. #42 - John Hunter Nemechek
  10. #17 - Chris Buescher

Even after earning a sudden new lease on playoff life following the events of post-race tech inspection at Charlotte, where Alex Bowman's car being too light led to him being disqualified and Logano being put back above the cut line to advance to the next round, Logano did not show outright winning pace throughout the day compared to others, including Christopher Bell, who led 155 of 267 laps.

Given the choice between saving fuel to make it to the end of the final 69-lap run or pit for fresh tires and fuel to the finish midway through the run, crew chief Paul Wolfe elected to have Logano save fuel and put him in position to win. A position Logano capitalized on, maintaining his streak of making the Championship 4 every other year since the current playoff format was introduced in 2014. And since 2018, Logano has made the Championship 4 by winning the opening race of the Round of 8 four times.

"Man, we do some fuel mileage stuff, don't we? Holy cow," Logano told NBC Sports. "What an incredible turn of events the last week ... We're going to the Championship 4 again! I don't know what the deal is with the even-year thing, but maybe it's real. Thanks to the fans out here, thanks to Roush Yates engines for making great fuel mileage. Great calls by Paul, Nick Hensley our gas man making sure she's full, giving me the good info I need to save fuel and keep the lead that we needed to.

"Boy, we're going racing again. What an incredible situation. I'm so blessed."

Playoffs turned on their head

The door for Logano to completely upend the Championship 4 picture was opened by a massive turn of events on lap 89. After winning stage one, Tyler Reddick was trying to make his way back forward from midpack after mixed pit strategies under caution jumbled up the running order, and tried to force his way to the outside of both Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. on the exit of turn 4, seemingly without regard to those two going up the track to exit the corner.

Reddick and Elliott collided, triggering a grinding five=car crash that sent Reddick upside down after launching over the transition from the infield grass to the quad oval while also collecting Brad Keselowski, Austin Cindric, and another playoff contender in Ryan Blaney. Reddick suffered terminal damage and finished 35th, while Blaney and Elliott wound up 32nd and 33rd after having to spend the rest of the day nursing badly wounded cars.

"You have to be aggressive on restarts ... Being myself on a mile and a half, being aggressive – by the time I realized I was in trouble, the 19  started sliding and the 9 was coming up and I was pretty much already on their outside at that point, with nowhere to really go," Reddick told NBC Sports. "I needed to make the decision earlier when I saw them sliding to be more conservative to avoid an incident – just not who I am.

"... We can still have a good day at Homestead and be in the mix in Martinsville. Ideally, yeah, it would have been nice to win today. It would be nice to win next week, and that's what we'll focus on. But thankfully we got 10 stage points in Stage 1, and it's not like we are absolutely out of it on points yet. We are going to have to be perfect here on out, probably."

More unexpected developments in the playoff battle came on pit road, as two of the pit crews who have made it into the Round of 8 ended up having disastrous days. During a mid-race cycle of green flag pit stops, Kyle Larson's crew in particular had an absolute nightmare of a stop in which the jack was dropped on the right side of the car as the rear tire changer was still tightening Larson's right rear.

Larson's crew went back to the right side to tighten the right rear, but in the process forgot to change the left rear tire, forcing crew chief Cliff Daniels to call Larson back to pit road, costing them a full lap. Larson was eventually able to get the free pass to get back on the lead lap and fought back from that gaffe -- as well as damage to the left front nose of his car from a piece of debris -- to finish 11th.

"I thought we would probably finish that stage in third or fourth, and then our pit stop was super messy," Larson told NBC Sports. "That was a bummer, but we were able to fight to stay one lap down and then fight to get in that lucky dog position and get back to the lead lap. Just wasn't quite great there the last two laps, but we made the most of it. It could've been a lot worse."

Denny Hamlin also had multiple poor pit stops, but he was able to use the same strategy Logano employed to finish eighth, one of four playoff drivers to finish in the top 10 along with Logano in first, Bell in second and William Byron in fourth.

With Logano now having clinched a spot in the Championship 4 in Phoenix, Bell (+42), Larson (+35), and Byron (+27) all hold sizable advantages over the cut line for the remaining three spots in the final round. Hamlin (-27), Reddick (-30), Blaney (-47) and Elliott (-53) all have deep points holes to try and climb out of over the remaining two races of the Round of 8.

Race results rundown

  • Besides Logano, Suarez and Hamlin at the front, the other drivers on the same strategy were able to stretch their fuel mileage to the end to earn better finishes than they otherwise would have. John Hunter Nemechek used the strategy to earn his fourth top 10 of the year in ninth, while Corey LaJoie parlayed it into a 14th-place finish and his second top 15 in four starts with Rick Ware Racing. Michael McDowell and Cody Ware were also on the same strategy, finishing 20th and 21st.
  • Harrison Burton enjoyed one of his better overall runs of the 2024 season, as he would crack the top 10 at one point before earning a 15th-place finish to give him his second straight top-20 finish. Burton had previously been on a streak of six straight finishes outside the top 20, including his elimination from the playoffs at the end of the Round of 16.
  • Justin Haley made his presence felt at the front of the field midway through the race, finishing seventh in Stage 2 and then running as high up as the top five before settling for a 17th-place finish. Haley was actually the second best of the Spire Motorsports cars, as Zane Smith finished just ahead of him in 16th to continue his rookie year's second-half turnaround.
  • The first caution of the day came out after a vicious accident in Turn 3, in which Austin Dillon was turned head-on into the outside wall by Daniel Hemric as the two cars were racing for the free pass spot. Dillon made his displeasure known with Hemric afterward, telling NBC Sports he was "flat out wrecked" by the driver of the No. 31. Hemric would go on to finish 19th.
  • Compared to other races that he has run since coming out of retirement to race a part-time schedule for Legacy Motor Club, NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was able to enjoy an uneventful and incident-free day on his way to finishing 28th. Johnson tied his season-best finish, which he had previously set in the Daytona 500 and at Dover in May.

Christopher Bell can't get there! Joey Logano has made the Championship 4 every other year since 2018 by winning the first race of the Round of 8, AND HE'S GOING TO DO IT AGAIN!

Joey Logano WINS the South Point 400, and he's IN the Championship 4 AGAIN!

1 - #22 - Joey Logano
2 - #20 - Christopher Bell
3 - #99 - Daniel Suarez
4 - #24 - William Byron
5 - #48 - Alex Bowman
6 - #19 - Martin Truex Jr.
7 - #1 - Ross Chastain
8 - #11 - Denny Hamlin
9 - #42 - John Hunter Nemechek
10 - #17 - Chris Buescher

The gap between Suarez and Bell is now under 10 seconds, but Bell is set to catch traffic soon. He's 9.2 seconds back and running up on John Hunter Nemechek in fourth. Bell makes the pass, but not efficiently. It looked like he tried to go to the inside of Nemechek down the backstretch, but Nemechek went down there in order to yield to Bell thinking he wanted the outside.

Several lapped cars for Bell to pass before he gets to Hamlin in third. Meanwhile, Logano is 1.5 seconds back of Suarez for the lead. 10 to go.

Bell is up to fifth, 13.5 seconds back. And he's got clean racetrack in front of him before he catches Nemechek for fourth. He's also built a 1.6 second advantage on Bowman.

Suarez's lead over Logano is 2.4 seconds coming up on 15 laps to go.

20 laps to go. Joe Gibbs Racing's software is predicting that Bell will catch Suarez sometime within the last five laps. He's made it up to sixth, 15 seconds back. He's going to have to gain about a second and change a lap to make that happen.

Christopher Bell is making time on Daniel Suarez and has more than enough time to try and get there. He just passed Cody Ware and Michael McDowell to move up to sixth spot. He's got 19.5 seconds to make up on Suarez with 25 laps to go.

The burden is on Logano and Hamlin in particular to save fuel to the finish. That's the topic of conversation on the 11 radio.

Daniel Suarez yet again is electing to run long, and eight cars have elected to use the same strategy including two playoff drivers. Joey Logano is now second, Denny Hamlin third, and then it's John Hunter Nemechek fourth, Corey LaJoie fifth, Noah Gragson sixth, Michael McDowell seventh and Cody Ware eighth.

Christopher Bell and Alex Bowman are running just ahead of Suarez on the tail end of the lead lap, but they are running about a second a lap faster with 30 laps to go and the top eight likely all having to stretch both their fuel and tires to the finish.

Was almost a moot point as Ryan Preece got out of shape and into the wall in Turn 1, but he continues without incident.

Chris Buescher has come to pit road from the top five with 41 laps to go. Four tires and fuel to the end of the race for him, and Martin Truex Jr. comes down as well as Kyle Larson and Carson Hocevar.

That's going to draw other cars to pit road. Alex Bowman hits pit road from second, and Christopher Bell has to respond and brings the No. 20 Toyota to pit road with 38 laps to go. Byron stays out for now and assumes the lead before pitting the next lap.

William Byron is now dropping back and has lost second to Alex Bowman. The gap from first to second is up to 1.6 seconds coming up on 40 laps to go.

Bell has put some daylight back between himself and William Byron. The gap between the two leaders is eight tenths of a second with 50 laps to go. Alex Bowman in third is within two seconds of the lead, and boy is that going to sting if Bowman can finish there -- or better -- after being eliminated from the playoffs in post-race tech inspection last week.

Martin Truex Jr. is 3.5 seconds back, just a few tenths ahead of Chris Buescher in fifth. That's the top five.

William Byron has found something. About 10 laps into this run, Byron has been able to keep pace with Christopher Bell for the race lead and stands just three tenths back of the lead.

Byron now closing on Bell for the lead and takes a look to the inside entering Turn 1, but Bell closes the door and forces Byron to lift and regroup.

A BIG block thrown by Justin Haley on Chris Buescher. It doesn't work as Buescher takes fifth spot away. That happened just behind the battle for second, which William Byron just took from Truex.

Now back on the lead lap, Kyle Larson is trying to knife his way through traffic around 20th spot, a group which includes Denny Hamlin. Larson will take spots from Josh Berry, Hamlin, and now Daniel Hemric as he advances to 17th with his sights set on more.

Some updates from in-car radio chatter: This caution comes at an interesting time, as the field will have to save fuel if they want to make it to the finish on the tank they have. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin's crew has given him an update on what caused the vibration he was talking about.

Green flag will come with 69 laps to go.

Bell and Truex hold serve off pit road, while William Byron takes third back from Chris Buescher. Looked like mostly four tires at the front with the exception of Michael McDowell who took two tires to move up to 10th.

Ty Gibbs needed a caution to get back on the lead lap and now he IS the caution! Gibbs got in the wall off Turn 4, then spun coming off Turn 2 the next lap to bring the caution out. And as a result, that gives Kyle Larson the free pass and puts him back on the lead lap.

Larson and Gibbs still going at it for the free pass spot! They've been swapping the spot back and forth and both have been using the top of the track to their advantage. Gibbs uses it one lap and gets by Larson, then Larson uses it the next lap and gets by Gibbs!

As that fight rages on, Christopher Bell's lead is now up to two seconds on Martin Truex.

Back to green on Lap 173. It's Bell, Truex, and Byron at the front of the field.

Truex is able to hang to Bell's outside for the opening lap, but Bell is able to fend him off on the bottom. Chris Buescher has taken third spot from William Byron, and Justin Haley and Bubba Wallace are racing each other for fifth now.

Major battle of consequence in midpack as Larson and Gibbs are going at it for 24th and the right to be the first car one lap down. Should a caution come out, whoever prevails in that battle will get the free pass and be back on the lead lap.

Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin is reporting a vibration in his car as he runs 20th.

Looks like all of the leaders will come to pit road after that long run to the end of Stage 2. The top five all hold serve on pit road, and another major issue on pit road Denny Hamlin who first stopped short in his box and then had to stop and back up because the left rear on his car was not tight.

Second bad stop of the day for Hamlin's team in a race that has seen absolute disaster-level pit stops for normally good crews.

Truex is able to catch Bell in lapped traffic, but Bell is able to use Josh Berry as a pick to protect the lead and get back to the finish line to win Stage 2. Todd Gilliland has a left rear problem and had to come to pit road before the end of the stage.

1 - #20 - Christopher Bell
2 - #19 - Martin Truex Jr.
3 - #24 - William Byron
4 - #17 - Chris Buescher
5 - #22 - Joey Logano
6 - #48 - Alex Bowman
7 - #7 - Justin Haley
8 - #99 - Daniel Suarez
9 - #23 - Bubba Wallace
10 - #41 - Ryan Preece

Bell has been able to maintain his advantage over Truex for now. The gap is up to four tenths of a second as Bell works his way through lapped traffic. William Byron has entered the picture in third, as he's only a second back of the leader and even less than that back of Truex.

Coming up on five to go now and a big opportunity for Bell to earn stage points.

As Christopher Bell marches towards Daniel Suarez at the front, there's some intrigue now as Martin Truex Jr. runs right behind Bell and challenges him for what will be the race lead in about a second and a half. Now Truex drives to the inside of Bell, and he momentarily puts himself in position to make the pass before Bell is able to fend him off on the outside.

Bell and Truex now easily pass Suarez and will have about 15 laps to joust with each other before stage end.
