The Spurs have an open roster spot, and Josh Howard doesn't have an NBA team to play for. Seems like a perfect fit, right?
According to Yahoo Sports, the Spurs are putting Howard through a workout on Monday. Thing is, the Spurs are especially deep at small forward with Stephen Jackson, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Howard is reasonably versatile and could slide into some shooting guard. But, for the most part, the Spurs are set there.
So why look at Howard? Because it's the Spurs. You know that if he signed there, Howard would magically hit 40 percent of his threes and turn into a terrific role player in spot minutes. It's the way the world works.
Howard still could re-sign with the Jazz ,and he's interested in staying in Utah. But time is running out before training camp, and he's looking for a new NBA home.
The Spurs are always keen to pick up quality veteran talent. And if Howard, 32, is healthy, he can add a lot to a team in terms of defense, toughness and experience. Those are things the Spurs don't especially need but always seem to value.
