Minnesota Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams has been a disappointment compared to the expectations of him when he was coming into the league, but his last two months of play have been very encouraging. What we've been given a glimpse of here and there is the incredible athleticism that made him a highlight favorite at the University of Arizona.
Against the San Antonio Spurs Sunday night, Williams did something Wolves fans have been hoping to see more of: He attacked the rim and didn't care if anybody was in the way.
He received a pass at the top of the key, took advantage of a sloppy close-out by Boris Diaw and went charging down the lane. DeJuan Blair attempted to jump with Williams but didn't succeed in bothering the attack at all. Williams leaned his body away from the contact while throwing down a thunderous dunk.
It ultimately didn't matter. The Wolves were blown out after another lackluster second half, but it's little plays like the one Williams made that give hope he'll continue to improve as a player.
