The Warriors had two big questions going into the preseason. Who would start at small forward, and would they be healthy enough to contend? At full strength, this looks like a playoff team. But Andrew Bogut hadn't traveled with the team during preseason games and hadn't practiced yet. Stephen Curry tweaked his ankle again and gave everyone a scare, including himself. There was just no way to feel confident in them because of their health situation.
But CSN Bay Area reports that Monday, for the first time with this roster, the entire team practiced. Curry, Bogut, Andris Biedrins (who had been out with a groin injury), the works. Everyone practiced. There's no word if Bogut will be ready for the season opener on Wednesday, but you'd have to think the odds are against it with so little time to prepare both schematically and physically.
The other question has also been answered, as Mark Jackson made an announcement on the starting small forward after a tough camp battle between Brandon Rush and rookie Harrison Barnes:
“Harrison Barnes will be my starting small forward,” Jackson said after Monday’s practice. “It’s well-deserved. I could have gone either way. Brandon Rush had a very good preseason. I just think it’s a better role for Rush coming off the bench -- either coming in for [shooting guard] Klay [Thompson] or Harrison.
“And I think Harrison earned it. He played very well, and I thought his last game was his best performance. With that group, we’ll be able to utilize some of his strengths -- athletic ability, slashing ability. He’s a guy that has shown I can trust him defensively. He competes. It’s a great accomplishment for him, but we’re not done individually or collectively.”
via Barnes to start opener for Warriors. Will Bogut?.
It's a good fit on both ends. The Warriors need a shooter like Rush off the bench, and he should pair well with Jarrett Jack to balance scoring. Barnes showed a lot in preseason, especially defensively, where he really got up under his cover and pressured him on and off the ball.
The lineup's set, the roster's healthy enough to practice. If they can pull this thing together, Golden State has a shot at legitimately competing for the first time in years.
