J.J. Barea: Brings end to playing career
Barea announced Wednesday in an interview with Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia that he has retired from professional basketball.
Since being waived by Dallas in training camp ahead of the 2020-21 season, Barea had seen action over the past two years with foreign clubs in Spain and in his native Puerto Rico. The 38-year-old never appeared likely to make a bid for an NBA comeback, but he'll now choose to end his playing career entirely as he looks to make the jump into the coaching ranks. Barea ended his time in the NBA with averages of 8.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per game across 831 regular-season appearances with the Mavericks and Timberwolves over 14 seasons.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Starting vs. Kings
Barea will start Tuesday's game against the Kings.
There was some initial confusion, as the Mavs first announced Trey Burke as the starter, but it will apparently be Barea, who fills Seth Curry's (leg) vacated spot. Barea did not appear in either of Dallas' first two seeding games.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Scores 14 to go with full line
Barea pitched in 14 points (5-13 FG, 2-8 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds and six assists in 23 minutes during Sunday's 118-111 scrimmage loss to the Pacers.
Barea contributed a solid stat line off the bench and figures to continue to benefit from the absence of Jalen Brunson (shoulder), who is out for the rest of the campaign. Though Delon Wright may challenge Barea for minutes at backup point guard, Wright is capable of filling in at multiple positions, so Barea might hold pretty decent value for the remainder of the restart.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Won't play Wednesday
Barea (ankle) will not play Wednesday against the Pelicans, Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Nursing ankle injury
Barea is listed as questionable ahead of Wednesday's matchup with the Pelicans due to an ankle injury.
Barea presumably picked up the injury in Sunday's victory over the Bulls. With Jalen Brunson (shoulder) out and Seth Curry (back) questionable, the Mavericks could be thin in their backcourt should Barea ultimately be unable to go. More clarity on his status should come closer to game time.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Not starting after all
Updating a previous report, Barea won't start Sunday's game against the Timberwolves and will instead come off the bench.
The lineup the Mavericks initially released featured Barea starting at point guard for the injured Luka Doncic (thumb), but Delon Wright will end up moving up to the top unit in place of the All-Star. With Doncic and Jalen Brunson (shoulder) both sidelined, Barea should at least benefit from a boost in minutes while he sticks in a bench role.

Mavericks' J.J. Barea: Cracks starting five
Barea will start at point guard Sunday against the Timberwolves, Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News reports.
The 35-year-old will get the chance to make fifth start of the season while Luka Doncic (thumb) sits out the front end of the back-to-back set. Though Barea should benefit from a boost in playing time with the move to the top unit, don't expect him to approach the nearly 33 minutes per game Doncic is averaging for the season. Instead, coach Rick Carlisle will likely use a combination of Barea and reserve Delon Wright to absorb the All-Star's playing time.

Barea had five points (2-5 FG, 1-3 3Pt), two assists, one rebound and one steal over 10 minutes in Wednesday's 109-103 win against the Spurs.
Barea has seen inconsistent playing time this season, partially due to injuries, but he's now appeared in the Mavericks' last three games. Wednesday's performance was his least productive performance of the three, but the stretch has also marked just the second time this season that Barea has appeared in three consecutive games.

Barea scored 11 points (4-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT) and added five rebounds and nine assists in 21 minutes during Friday's 128-121 loss to Houston.
Barea drew his first start and also played in back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 6. He did a decent job filling in for Luka Doncic (ankle), logging a team-high nine assists. He could be in line for a decent run of playing time if the 35-year-old can keep it up while Doncic is out.
