Nicolas Brussino: Waived by Hawks
Brussino was waived by the Hawks on Friday, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports.
The Hawks picked up the Argentinian off waivers in July, but he's been back and forth between the G-League and Atlanta through the start of the regular season. Brussino hasn't done much to suggest he can be a rotational player in the NBA, and after being waived, a spot in the G-League or a return overseas seem like the most likely outcomes for the rest of the year.

Brussino was assigned to the G-League in late November and has only played in four games in the NBA this season. Even if he isn't sent back down to the G-League, the 24-year-old will likely struggle to see the court deep into the season since he seems to have fallen out of favor with the coach.

Brussino was claimed off waivers by the Hawks on Saturday, Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Brussino, who was let go by the Mavericks on July 20, has been picked up by the Hawks. He showed some promise last season in limited minutes, but Dallas seemingly felt he wasn't worth the money he would have been guaranteed had they held onto him. The Hawks, however, are deep in rebuilding mode and jumped on the opportunity to add a wing player to the mix. Brussino averaged 2.8 points and 1.7 boards across 9.6 minutes per game last season. His potential workload for the upcoming season is pretty up in the air, though it seems possible he could garner a similar role for the Hawks.

Despite showing some late-season promise at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, the Mavericks aren't entirely sold on his future development, so they've decided not to guarantee his contract by its due date. That sends Brussino back to the open free agent market and while there could be some interest from teams in need of depth on the wing, there's a chance Brussino ultimately ends up back overseas in an attempt to restore his value. He played in 54 games for Dallas, averaging 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds across 9.6 minutes per contest.

Mavericks' Nicolas Brussino: Earns 37 minutes Wednesday
Brussino tallied 15 points (4-8 FG, 4-8 3Pt, 3-3 FT), seven rebounds, two assists and two steals across 37 minutes in Wednesday's 100-93 victory over the Grizzlies.
In just his second start on the season, Brussino saw a team-high in minutes and tied for a team-high in points. All of his attempts from the floor came behind the arc, even though he hasn't been efficient from that range, shooting just 29 percent from three over the last six games. Regardless, when Brussino has gotten time, he has showed confidence to shoot and an ability to grab boards, which could earn him more minutes in future years if he continues to work on his shooting efficiency.

With the Mavericks playing without J.J. Barea (rest), Seth Curry (shoulder) and Wesley Matthews (rest) in Wednesday's regular season finale, there are plenty of backcourt minutes up for grabs. As a result, Brussino will make his second start of the season. In his first start he played 33 minutes and posted a line of 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Brussino started at shooting guard and generated 13 points (4-12 FG, 2-8 3Pt, 3-4 FT), seven rebounds, five assists and two steals across 33 minutes in a 98-87 loss to the Kings on Tuesday.
Brussino benefited from the Mavericks holding out three key regulars in Wesley Matthews (rest), Dirk Nowitzki (Achilles) and Seth Curry (shoulder) and wound up leading the team in scoring on a night when the team struggled to generate offense. It's expected that at least Matthews will be back in action Wednesday against the Clippers, but Brussino should see a steady uptick from the 8.0 minutes per game he's averaging on the season over the team's final five contests while the lottery-bound Mavericks look to assess their younger options.

Seth Curry (shoulder) and Wesley Matthews (rest) will both be sidelined for the game, providing Brussino with a rare starting opportunity. The rookie hasn't been in the rotation for much of the second half, but did see 17 minutes in Sunday's win over the Bucks. Brussino suited up in the Legends' 121-110 win over the Long Island Nets on Saturday, registering 16 points (4-6 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 7-7 FT), 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals in 31 minutes. The Mavericks sent him to the D-League so he'd have the opportunity to see the sort of extended run he wasn't receiving at the NBA level, and now that he's back with the parent club, it's likely that most of Brussino's in-game opportunities will come in garbage time.

Brussino was placed on assignment to the D-League late last week for the first time this season and he ended up taking part in three games for the Legends. He finished with averages of 16.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists during that span, but will now be recalled to the Mavericks in time for Sunday's matchup with the Timberwolves. That said, Brussino is averaging just 6.9 minutes per game with the big club and until he's able to claim a bigger role, he can continue to be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Brussino and A.J. Hammons were both dispatched to the D-League, and since the Mavericks are traveling to Minnesota for their next game Monday against the Timberwolves, it's not expected that either rookie will join the team in time for that contest. While Brussino saw regular run in the rotation when the Mavericks were dealing with multiple injuries on the wing earlier this season, most of his opportunities have been limited to garbage time recently. He's appeared in seven of the Mavs' last 12 games, averaging 5.4 minutes per game in those contests.
