K –- Nick Folk vs. Josh Brown. Entering his third season with the Jets and his sixth in the league, Nick Folk finds himself in competition with nine-year veteran Josh Brown. Folk’s numbers have been good –- he has averaged about 75 percent for field goals made over the past two years -– but Brown’s are better: 75 percent in 2011, 85 percent in 2010. Special teams coach Mike Westhoff has indicated, though, that Folk is the incumbent, it’s Brown’s job to lose. Their first-day numbers saw Folk go 4 for 4 with a long of 48 yards. Brown went 2 of 4 with a long of 52, but he missed from 42 and 44.
LG -- Matt Slauson vs. Vlad Ducasse. This one came a little out of the blue. But according to a team source, the team thinks Slauson, who is in the last year of his contract, is limited and the Jets may not want to pay him. Slauson said he’s been told only that he will be splitting time with Ducasse, but a competition for the starting role has commenced. Ducasse, the team’s second-round pick in 2010, has had a hard time finding a role. He was originally projected as a tackle but was slow to develop. Ducasse said coach Rex Ryan told him if he wants to make the team he needs to be able play all the positions on the offensive line. Ryan confirmed it is a competition. This one could get interesting.
RT - Wayne Hunter vs. Jeff Otah. When the Jets traded for Jeff Otah from the Panthers, a message was sent to Hunter that he'll be competing for a job. Hunter was disappointing in 2011, and the team is hoping to find a more reliable solution. But now there’s a monkey wrench with Otah having failed his physical. He has until July 31 to pass it and get on the field. Otah has played only four games in the past two years. If he doesn’t pass, the team is still not going to hand Hunter the job.
