No major surprises during the 49ers' first round of cuts Monday as they trimmed their roster from 89 to 75. The roster will be paired down to 53 by Friday.
RB Jewel Hampton was moved to the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List and rookie LB Darius Fleming was placed on the Reserve/Phsyically Unable to Perform List.
Notable cuts: DB Cory Nelms (2nd year, undrafted, Miami) -- Nelms spent last season on the practice squad and was competing for a job as a backup S and for a role on special teams. DC Vic Fangio said last week the coaching staff was still looking for players to emerge at S. It's mildly surprising he didn't survive the first waive of cuts. OL Jason Slowey (rookie, 6th round draft pick, Western Oregon) -- Slowey was viewed as a project after being drafted out of Division-II Western Oregon, so it was assumed he'd be a solid candidate for the practice squad. He could still end up there, but after being waived in the first round, it doesn't appear likely. The strength and speed of the game was difficult for Slowey to adjust to as he wasn't able to pass second-year pro Chase Beeler on the depth chart at C. Slowey was the only draft pick among the cuts.
