The San Francisco 49ers announced Friday that they promoted DE Tony Jerod-Eddie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The team signed Jerod-Eddie to a three-year contact and expects him to contribute immediately.
“We felt that’s where we needed the depth this weekend, this game,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “Expect him to be involved Sunday.”
The news didn’t’ come as a complete shock to Jerod-Eddie, who’d been told early in the week by defensive line coach Jim Tomsula that it was a possibility he would get bumped up.
“I’m really proud to be a part of this team and thankful for them giving me the opportunity to play,” said Jerod-Eddie, who told his mom and brothers immediately after he got the good news.
He’ll primarily line up at defensive end but can play tackle in nickel situations.
““He’s been a big body. Been strong,” Harbaugh said. “Has a good understanding of our system. And he gets an opportunity. So, excited to watch him compete on Sunday.”
The decision to promote Jerod-Eddie instead of a wide receiver could also be an indicator that Will Tukuafu (neck) likely won’t play Sunday against the Cardinals. Tukuafu was officially listed as questionable.
Vernon Davis progresses: TE Vernon Davis will go through his final progression Saturday in order to be cleared to play Sunday against the Cardinals after suffering a concussion last week against Seattle.
Replay shows that Seattle’s Kam Chancellor did notcotact Davis’ head on the play, but Davis has a different opinion.
"I don't think it was legal," Davis said. "I saw it on the news, but I didn't really go in and look at it. I didn't want to see it."
Chencellor will not be fined for the hit.
Justin Smith says he’s good for playoffs: Injured DE Justin Smith told the Sacramento Bee on Friday he’d “be ready to play,” in a potential playoff game next week. Smith has a partially torn triceps ligament and was officially listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against Arizona.
Smith was injured in the third quarter of the 49ers’ 41-34 win at New England on Dec. 16.
