49ers vs. Seahawks score: Russell Wilson and DK Metcalf dominate San Francisco, Jimmy Garoppolo injured

The Seattle Seahawks earned their way back into the win column on Sunday by defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 37-27. This is just the second time in franchise history the Seahawks have started 6-1, and the first came back in 2013 when they won the Super Bowl. Russell Wilson was again incredible, as he completed 27 of 37 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. DK Metcalf was easily the MVP of this matchup for catching 12 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

The 49ers' quarterback situation might be something to watch moving forward. Jimmy Garoppolo left for the locker room at the beginning of the fourth quarter after reaggravating an ankle injury, and Nick Mullens stepped in and passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Garoppolo's health will certainly be something to watch moving forward. This was an important NFC West matchup and a big-time win for the Seahawks.

Why the Seahawks won

It's about time we start mentioning Metcalf when we discuss elite wide receivers in the NFL. He caught six passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns just in the first half, and he was bigger, faster and more athletic than anyone the 49ers had in the secondary. It's almost unfair when you consider the kind of challenge he presents as both a jump-ball receiver and then a home-run hitter as well.

Metcalf's two scores in the first half had everyone feeling like the Seahawks were in control, and Wilson was able to take it from there.

Why the 49ers lost

I'm not here to lead the "bench Jimmy Garoppolo" movement, but the quarterback situation is something we probably need to discuss. Garoppolo completed 11 of 16 passes for 84 yards and an interception, while Mullens completed 18 of 25 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in just a single quarter. With Garoppolo, the offense was not in sync, and throwing downfield was not much of an option. The Seahawks came into this game with what really was the worst defense in the league, as they allowed an average of 479.2 yards of total offense per game.

Even if we don't want to have the discussion about benching Garoppolo, we at least have to question how healthy he is after he was sent to the locker room in the second half, clearing the way for Mullens. George Kittle also had to come out of the game late with an injury.

Turning point

Down just six points at the beginning of the second half, this game certainly wasn't out of reach for Garoppolo and the 49ers. They even got the ball to start the third quarter. Unfortunately, on that first possession of the second half the 49ers went three-and-out while recording a total of minus-3 yards. They then punted to the Seahawks, who extended the lead to 13 points after a nine-play, 63-yard drive. At that point, it certainly felt like the game was over.

Play of the game

This is the one play that describes how this matchup went. Metcalf scored the first touchdown of the game, and it was a 46-yard catch and run in which he basically just outmaneuvered the entire San Francisco secondary.

What's next

The 49ers will be on a short week, hosting the Green Bay Packers on "Thursday Night Football." Aaron Rodgers and Co. will be looking for a rebound victory, as they fell to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, 28-22. The Seahawks hit the road next week to take on the Bills in Buffalo. The Bills got back into the win column this week, defeating the New England Patriots, 24-21.

Thanks for joining us! We certainly have an interesting issue at quarterback when it comes to the 49ers moving forward. Jimmy Garoppolo is clearly not 100 percent healthy and then Nick Mullens came in and looked much more comfortable under center. The Seahawks were the better team and they proved it tonight. Check back soon, as this article will be turned into a takeaways piece.

Fred Warner going down is an absolutely huge loss. The 49ers have multiple holes to patch on this sinking ship!

The 49ers simply cannot stop Seattle's passing attack. Russell Wilson is up to 206 yards and FOUR touchdowns now!

Wow Jimmy G is certainly limping. I would go ahead and put Mullens in.

So that was a gross series by San Fran, but I do like they at least looked downfield! Did you see the offensive line fall apart on that third and two? WOW. I thought this unit was better than that.
