The Bears were active participants in Black Monday, firing coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery.
And considering the missteps made by Emery (signing Jay Cutler to what looked then and looks now to be a ridiculous contract, hiring Trestman in the first place) and Trestman (allowing the team to sink so quickly after the middle of the 2014 season), that was probably the correct decision.
Virginia McCaskey almost certainly would agree.
During his news conference Monday after Emery and Trestman were released, team chairman George McCaskey was asked what role his mother, 91-year-old Virginia, had played in the firings.
"She agrees with the decisions that we made," McCaskey said, via the Chicago Tribune. "She's pissed off. I can't think of a 91-year-old woman that that description would apply, but in this case, I can't think of a more accurate description."
Virginia McCaskey, the daughter of George Halas, apparently badly wants to see another NFL championship. It has, after all, been nearly 30 years since Chicago won a Super Bowl.
"She's been on this earth for eight of the Bears' nine championships, and she wants more," George McCaskey said. "She feels that it's been too long since the last one, and that dissatisfaction is shared by her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She's fed up with mediocrity. She feels that she and Bears fans everywhere deserve better."
