The first stage of training camp is over for the Philadelphia Eagles and coach Andy Reid declared it a success -- with reservations.

The Eagles closed camp at Lehigh University on Tuesday and, after a day off, they’ll resume practicing at their facility in Philadelphia. They lived in the dorms at Lehigh University for almost a month and Reid said his team laid the foundation for a successful season.

When asked what his team got out of the stay at Lehigh, the first thing Reid said was “camaraderie.’’ That was especially important for the Eagles, who were thrown together last year with no offseason program and a limited training camp because of the lockout. Reid said that wasn’t an excuse for last season‘s disappointing 8-8 season, since all NFL teams worked with the same handicaps. But the Eagles not only had several new players at key positions, they also had a revamped coaching staff that did things much differently on both sides of the ball.

“I thought that everything was kind of rushed last year,’’ wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said.

Now the Eagles -- all of them -- have had a chance to play and live together for an entire year and that has made a difference.

“You feel a lot more natural in the whole process this year,’’ defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said. “Last year, I didn’t even know where to go out here when I first got here. It is the process. Everything feels more natural and normal right now and I think that is going to help out a whole lot.”

As is the case every year in every camp, some players helped themselves and some players hurt themselves. Here’s a look at some Eagles who fell into those categories.

On the rise

Wide receiver Damaris Johnson: He’s probably No. 1 on this list. Johnson, a rookie from Tulsa, wasn’t even drafted and now appears to be a key member of the team, especially as a punt returner. He’s small (5-8, 170) and still has to prove he can endure, but so far, so good.

Running back Dion Lewis: He’s been slowed lately by a sore hamstring, but he impressed everybody before that. Lewis benefits as much as anyone from having an offseason program since he didn’t have one last year as rookie. He looks stronger and hits the hole harder.

Defensive end Phillip Hunt: He joined the Eagles last year after leading the CFL in sacks, but he never seemed to find his way in Philadelphia until now. Hunt has made plays every day in practice and had two sacks vs. the Steelers. The odds are still against him making the team at this top-heavy position, but he’s improved those odds almost every day.

Quarterback Nick Foles: The rookie was very impressive in preseason debut vs. the Steelers, even though he played with and against other third-stringers. But he also had a good camp and impressed everybody with his poise and arm strength -- so much so that some people feel he should be the No. 2 QB ahead of Mike Kafka.

Tight end Clay Harbor: He showed flashes the last two years, but he’s also shown consistency in camp this summer and he’s been one of the stars of the show, so much so that the Eagles will probably add to their two-tight end packages.

On the decline

Tackle Demetress Bell: He was handed a starting job and couldn’t hold it, as he was demoted this week in favor of King Dunlap. His benching could just be temporary, but there’s no question Bell has had trouble adjusting to the Eagles’ system, which is much different than what he ran in Buffalo.

Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett: Nobody can figure out what the problem is with last year’s second-round pick. Jarrett couldn’t get on the field last season, not even on special teams, and he was supposed to benefit mightily from the offseason program, but so far we haven’t seen it. And now he faces the very real possibility of not even making the team.

Cornerback Trevard Lindley: This former fourth-round pick once had promising future with Eagles, but he seems to have regressed and fallen behind younger players like Curtis Marsh and Brandon Hughes and rookie Brandon Boykin, and now Lindley probably won’t even make the team.
