The good: QB Alex Smith is no longer short on weapons. In WR A.J. Jenkins (Illinois) and RB LaMichael James (Oregon), the team got two explosive, productive players who will add depth to an offense that already added WRs Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. The bad: The team didn’t pick up a sure-fire starter for its vacant RG spot with the selection of Joe Looney (Wake Forest) in the fourth round. Looney will compete for the job, but the position remains in a state of uncertainty. The bottom line: GM Trent Baalke’s recent draft success makes it hard to question his decisions. Based on last year’s success, the free-agent acquisitions and the draft, the 49ers should be a better team than last year when it was a muffed punt away from the Super Bowl. Grade: B+
