Bears WR Brandon Marshall suffered a shoulder injury against the 49ers. (US Presswire) |
Although the Chicago Bears didn't practice Wednesday, they released an injury report that reflected how beat up physically they were after Monday's 32-7 loss at San Francisco.
TE Kellen Davis suffered an ankle injury and WR Brandon Marshall a shoulder injury; neither would have practiced Wednesday.
QB Jason Campbell (ribs) and DT Stephen Paea (shoulder) also suffered injuries and would have practiced on a limited basis. Jay Cutler (concussion) and Matt Toeaina (calf) had injury situations left over from the previous week and would have been practicing on a limited basis.
LB Lance Briggs (thumb), RG Lance Louis (ankle), DE Shea McClellin (concussion) and DE Julius Peppers (thigh) all had injuries but would have had full practice participation.
Coach Lovie Smith announced that WR Alshon Jeffery needed knee surgery after Monday's game and, in a rare bit of candor, announced Jeffery will be out two to four weeks following the arthroscopic procedure.
New starters: Apparently Kelvin Hayden will be the nickel back going forward with D.J. Moore out of the lineup, and DE Corey Wootton will continue starting ahead of Israel Idonije after both Hayden and Wootton were up in the 49ers game.
Moore had been gradually losing snaps to Hayden before the 49ers game.
"He’s done a good job," Smith said of Hayden. "I know Monday night none of us played the way we need to, but Kelvin has warranted more playing time."
Wootton's start was a surprise, but Smith explained it this way: "Once we feel like a guy has warranted getting an opportunity to start or get playing time, we make those moves."
No slight: Offensive coordinator Mike Tice caused a few chuckles in the media room when he was asked whether he thought Cutler would be able to start.
"God, I hope so," he said, then explained after the laughter that he didn't mean it as a slight against backup Jason Campbell. "Not anything against Jason. Jason did a remarkable job based on the opportunities he was afforded. We gotta get our guy back."
