Monday Night Football preview

After starting the season 8-2 and looking like a serious threat in the AFC, the Indianapolis Colts (8-6) are in severe danger of missing the playoffs. The 49ers (10-4) have clinched a playoff spot and have a slim chance at winning the NFC West and the conference's top seed, but the division rival Seattle Seahawks are 12-3 and two other teams are 11-4. Philip Rivers put his expected Hall of Fame induction on hold to come in and play quarterback for Indianapolis after Daniel Jones went down with a torn Achilles in Week 14. That means the Colts will rely on running back Jonathan Taylor, who was the NFL rushing leader entering Week 16 with 1,443 yards and has a league-high 16 rushing touchdowns. Indy is eighth in the AFC playoff standings and needs a lot of help to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

The 49ers have won four consecutive games by double digits since quarterback Brock Purdy returned from injury. They are averaging 31 points over that span. The 49ers are 2-3 on Monday Night Football with Purdy under center, and he has thrown 11 interceptions in those five games. San Francisco has been hit with major injuries on the defensive side of the ball, including star pass rusher Joey Bosa, but is allowing 20.9 points per game, 11th-fewest in the NFL.
