As a rookie in 2011, there were interesting internal expectations placed on New York Jets RB Bilal Powell.

"When we drafted him, we thought he could be a replacement for [RB LaDainian Tomlinson]," coach Rex Ryan said.

In addition to all of the attention given to QB Tim Tebow and the wildcat, the Jets have talked extensively about the revitalization of their ground-and-pound offense. Sunday will be the first showcase of this "new" offense and the first opportunity the Jets will have to lay a foundation for the regular season.

Powell, who was inactive for the first 10 weeks of 2011 and had just 13 carries for 21 yards on the season, was a surprise standout during training camp.

"He's got skills to be a guy that's effective as a runner, pass protector and a receiver," coach Rex Ryan said. "That's why we drafted him."

Ryan added, "He's sharp mentally. I love the way he protects. He's a very aggressive blocker."

Right now, Ryan says, there's no "clear-cut" No. 2 behind starter RB Shonn Greene. Powell will share those duties with RB Joe McKnight based on the game and the game plan. However, McKnight is currently battling a hamstring injury, which could lead to more time for Powell, at least at the outset.

RBs coach Anthony Lynn says this year is Powell's first real chance to show what he can do.

"[Last year] you had LaDainian Tomlinson, you had Shonn Greene you had Joe McKnight. It has nothing to do with his talents. I think his talents have always been there. He's just getting an opportunity this year."

Powell was aware that the departure of Tomlinson was going to impact him.

"With LT gone, I knew I had to take a bigger role. I knew I had to mentally prepare for training camp. I leaned up a little bit, did more conditioning -- so now I can be more explosive."

Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano says that Powell has stood out to him every time he has played.

"He's got speed, good burst," Sparano said. "He's really impressed me. He's made yards when there's nothing there. He's made hard yards. He's blocked big people."

Asked what it will be like to be on the field for the season opener, Powell smiled. "I'm very excited to finally go out with the team."
