Vince Young had a few impressive plays during his short time with the Bills.
Just not enough of them.
Consistency -- specifically, a lack thereof -- was the buzzword tossed around following Young’s release Monday. Dating back to his first practices in the spring, the strong-armed QB never appeared to be fully comfortable in the Bills’ system.
“I think he had (the playbook) down with his thought processes, but we just didn’t see the consistency (with his play)," coach Chan Gailey said.
General manager Buddy Nix wouldn't be specific when asked about Young's shortcomings.
“I don't want to get in to what he can do and can’t do," Nix said. “It just didn't work out. Vince did everything he could. He worked hard at it and did everything we asked him to do. It just didn't work.”
Young’s last two preseason games perfectly summed up his time in Buffalo. Against the Minnesota Vikings he was impressive, going 8 of 14 for 123 yards, including a 64-yard strike to rookie T.J. Graham. One week later against Pittsburgh, he looked completely lost, going 12 of 26 for 103 yards with two ugly interceptions.
It's possible that this could be the end of the line for the former third overall pick. Young is only 29 years old and has off-the-charts physical skills, but he has struck out in backup opportunities with both Philadelphia and Buffalo.
Extra points: Rookie speedster T.J. Graham looked as fast as ever at Monday’s afternoon practice. Graham burst upfield on a punt return and earned praise from special teams coach Bruce DeHaven for his efforts. ... Ryan Fitzpatrick had an up-and-down workout but ended the session on a high note by connecting with TE Scott Chandler for two terrific throws down the middle in two-minute work. The second completion resulted in a touchdown for the offense.
Injury update: RT Erik Pears (groin) and DE Mark Anderson (groin) will be held out this week as they hope to gear up for the season opener. LB Bryan Scott also did not practice but should return on Tuesday.
