Late last week, Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey said he’s shocked when Leodis McKelvin doesn’t return a punt or kick for a touchdown.

The way McKelvin has been playing lately, Gailey probably wasn’t exaggerating.

McKelvin has been lights out as a returner this season, and he was rewarded for his efforts Wednesday by being named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 11. Against the Miami Dolphins last Thursday, McKelvin returned a punt 79 yards to give the Bills a 7-0 lead and plenty of momentum early in the first quarter.

“It’s been great to see,” QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said of McKelvin's performance. “Leo’s been very dynamic back there. He’s a guy that we’ve got to watch on every play now just to see if he’s going to take it back for a touchdown because that’s kind of how it’s been all year long.”

McKelvin is on pace to shatter several Bills special teams records. He has a remarkable average of 21.94 yards per punt return, which is well ahead of Roscoe Parrish’s franchise-best average of 16.3 yards in 2007.

His career average of 17.41 yards per punt return is also a Buffalo record, and he’s the first Bills player to ever have two punt returns for touchdowns in a single season. McKelvin has five returns for touchdowns in his career (three punt returns, one kick return and one interception return). 

“The crowd better get up and stand up for real cause you never know, I'm always ready to take one to the crib,” McKelvin said after last week’s win over Miami. “You give me three or four touches, one of them is going back. That's just the confidence in me and the guys that I've got.”

McKelvin's rookie contract is up after this season, but it's possible that he could stay in Buffalo given his performance on special teams and improved play on the defensive side of the ball.

Kyle Moore earns playing time: DE Kyle Moore has been one of the team’s most pleasant surprises on defense in recent weeks, and he’s earned the right to remain on the field even with Chris Kelsay likely back this weekend. “He will stay in,” Gailey said of Moore. “He will be in there a lot of snaps because he has earned the right. Guys that play well earn the right to play. It's not a detriment to the guy he is alternating with. Some guys earn the right to play.”

Moore was Buffalo’s best all-around DE in the team’s Week 11 win over Miami and has two sacks in the last three weeks.

McIntyre leaves practice: FB Corey McIntyre exited practice early during the portion of the workout that was open to the media. McIntyre has been dealing with a knee injury, Gailey said after practice, and may be held out of Thursdsay's practice as a precaution. McIntyre should be fine for Sunday against Indianapolis.

Brooks has dental surgery: CB Ron Brooks missed practice Wednesday after having emergency dental surgery. He’s expected to return by the end of the week.

Kelsay participates fully: DE Chris Kelsay participated fully in his first practice since suffering a neck injury on Nov. 8. Kelsay has been cleared medically but the Bills will wait and see how he handles practicing this week before making a decision on his availability for Sunday.
