The pads were popping Saturday as the Bills ended their week with a full-contact goal-line drill that featured live tackling.
“The defense won 5-3, and that’s the assessment because you either win or lose down there, there’s no in between,” coach Chan Gailey said. “You either score or you don’t. So I thought it was a good session. I thought our guys wanted to hit. They’ve been wanting to go live for a long time. ... It was good for everybody.”
The first and second team each received four reps of live work. With Fred Jackson sitting out, Tashard Choice found the end zone on the first play for the starters. Nick Barnett stuffed C.J. Spiller on the second play. Ryan Fitzpatrick scrambled out of bounds on the third play when he couldn’t find anyone open, and Spiller redeemed himself with a touchdown up the middle on the fourth and final play for the starters.
Highlights from the reserves include a touchdown from FB Corey McIntyre and a terrific tackle by LB Danny Batten at the line of scrimmage.
What else stood out: With Stevie Johnson (groin) sidelined, Buffalo’s receivers had some problems catching the ball for the second day in a row. ... Stephon Gilmore had a pick-six in team work, jumping an out pattern intended for Derek Hagan. ... Second-year pro Aaron Williams made his presence felt and was physical in run support. He also had two pass breakups. ... Rookie Cordy Glenn struggled again in both position and team drills. At this point, Chris Hairston may have the edge for the starting left tackle spot by default. ... Tyler Thigpen had a better day than Vince Young. At one point, Young let out a loud frustration yell after one of his passes sailed well above its intended target.
Hot, hot heat: The temperature reached 91 degrees during the afternoon session, and the Bills already had weary legs at the end of their second week of camp. “I thought it was a gut check,” Gailey said. “It’s not hot by a lot of people’s standards, but by these standards it is hot. I thought our guys sucked it up and went out and practiced hard. I thought they gave good effort, and hopefully it will pay dividends for us in the long run.”
Injury update: WR Stevie Johnson (groin), CB Justin Rogers (hamstring), S Josh Nesbitt (undisclosed), TE Mike Caussin (knee), WR David Nelson (knee), DE Chris Kelsay (groin) and DT Torell Troup (back) did not participate. RB Fred Jackson (leg) did not take part in any team drills. DT Kellen Heard (ankle) returned, and RT Erik Pears (groin/hernia) did some individual work.
Leonhard no longer an option: The Bills brought in safety Jim Leonhard for a visit earlier in the week, but he is no longer an option after signing with the Denver Broncos Saturday. The Bills could still use another safety for depth purposes and could turn to the waiver wire in the coming weeks.
