FINAL: Falcons 29, Buccaneers 28
An all-time rally for Atlanta as Zane Gonzalez nails a 43-yarder to win it.
Amid another lost season for the Falcons, Kirk Cousins delivered a night he and his team won't soon forget. Atlanta rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter for a stunning 29-28 win over the Buccaneers. Zane Gonzalez nailed a 43-yard field goal as time expired to cap an incredible rally.
How incredible? The Falcons hadn't won a game they trailed 14+ in the fourth quarter since 1993.
Tampa Bay appeared to be in control leading 28-14 in the fourth quarter, but Bijan Robinson scored a touchdown to cut Atlanta's deficit to 28-20 (the two-point conversion attempt failed).
Then Dee Alford picked off Baker Mayfield on the ensuing drive to give the visitors renewed life, and Kirk Cousins found Kyle Pitts for his third touchdown of the night. Once again, though, the two-point conversion failed.
The Atlanta defense got a stop to give the offense one more shot with two minutes left and no timeouts, and Cousins got the offense moving in the right direction again with a big completion to David Sills V. But Haason Reddick came up with a huge sack, and Atlanta committed a holding penalty -- its 19th accepted penalty on the night, most by any team this season -- and the odds seemed even longer.
But Cousins completed a checkdown to Kyle Pitts and then converted a fourth-and-14 with a 21-yard pass to Sills. That led to Gonzalez's game winner and a stunned Tampa Bay crowd.
Pitts put forth a truly marvelous effort: 11 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He's the first tight end to go 10/150/3 in a game since Shannon Sharpe in 1996. Robinson finished with 175 yards from scrimmage (93 rushing, 82 receiving) and a touchdown.
Tampa Bay (7-7) has now lost five of its last six games, and the Panthers (7-6) now lead the NFC South. Carolina faces New Orleans on Sunday.
They say history is written by the victors, but with the Falcons already out of playoff contention, we have to first focus on the Buccaneers' collapse. Consider the following:
The Buccaneers were down Tykee Smith, and they lost Zyon McCollum to injury during the game, but this is a stunning defensive meltdown. The Falcons were without Michael Penix Jr. They were without Drake London. Darnell Mooney wasn't 100%. And yet Tampa Bay had zero answers for Pitts all night, sacked Cousins just once and allowed 111 yards on 21 carries (5.3 yards per carry).
This was the most points scored Atlanta since Week 4. Again, only two wide receivers -- and five players total -- even had a single catch. Pitts had arguably the best tight end game ever. Cousins lit up every level of the defense. Seemingly no one could tackle Robinson consistently.
The collapse isn't solely on the defense. In fact, it was the defense that forced a turnover to set up the offense with a short field for the touchdown that gave Tampa Bay a 28-14 lead. Here were the final two possessions for the Buccaneers offense:
Mayfield took five sacks and threw an awful interception. For all of the moments of brilliance, his miscues cost him and his team dearly.
Mayfield suffered a shoulder injury in a Week 7 loss to the Lions and simply hasn't been the same since. Whether it's the shoulder or regressing to the mean, his play has fallen off steeply. He has six turnovers in the last five games.
Still, it is worth noting the Buccaneers have a 59% chance to make the playoffs according to SportsLine, in large part due to two remaining games against the Panthers. If Tampa Bay can sweep that, they'll be in. But the margin for error just got a lot smaller.
Given the circumstances -- out of the playoff race, backup quarterback, down late -- this is an absolute stunner. But Buccaneers fans know this feeling all too well against Kirk Cousins.
And now this: 373 yards, three touchdowns, zero turnovers and a win. Yes, the Tampa Bay defense left a lot to be desired with how it defended the short tosses, but Cousins made some big-boy throws in this one as well.
This was Cousins' 32nd career game-winning drive, which moves him inside the top 20 all-time. He's had a rollercoaster career -- one that's been mostly down in Atlanta -- but he showed again he can produce some magic.
In Pitts, London, Robinson and Penix, Atlanta used four straight top-10 picks on offensive players from 2021-24. The results, frankly, haven't matched. Pitts has been far too inconsistent. London has looked like a star, Robinson a superstar. Penix remains a big question mark.
But on at least this night, Robinson and Pitts showed why they can be foundational pieces for this offense. Pitts looked very much the part of a former No. 4 overall pick, a rare combination of size, speed and athleticism. Robinson made defenders look absolutely silly.
The Falcons swung the pendulum back the other way in 2025, drafting Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. in the first round. And while that was a short-sighted move (the Rams hold Atlanta's 2026 first-round pick), at least they're showing flashes. Pearce sacked Mayfield twice and has 7.5 sacks over his last six games. Walker had a half-sack and is up to 5.5 on the season.
The Falcons still have a lot to fix, and it may not matter if Penix either can't stay healthy or can't play at a high enough level. But nights like tonight show there's strong young talent at some of the game's most impactful positions.
An all-time rally for Atlanta as Zane Gonzalez nails a 43-yarder to win it.
The Falcons have moved into Tampa Bay territory with 30 seconds left after a 20-yard completion to David Sills V.
A truly unbelievable night from Kyle Pitts continues with this bobbling touchdown catch, but the Falcons once again fail on the two-point conversion, and it's 28-26, Tampa Bay.
Still, what a marvelous catch from Pitts. He, Bijan Robinson and Drake London (who is out tonight) can be legitimate building blocks for this offense, no matter what this offseason holds.
Darnell Mooney fumbled, and there were five Buccaneers around the ball. But it was Bijan Robinson who came away with it. Outstanding effort from an outstanding player. He might have saved the game for Atlanta.
What a great play from Dee Alford, who baited Baker Mayfield, sunk down to Mike Evans and made the athletic grab.
Mayfield now has five interceptions in his last five games, and Atlanta has renewed life.
My goodness, what a player Bijan Robinson is. And what a good job the Falcons keep doing responding. Each of Atlanta's three touchdowns have come immediately after a Tampa Bay score.
Really great play design here.
He then added on the two-point conversion, and Tampa Bay is up 14.
What a massive play for Tampa Bay. Bijan Robinson caught a quick pass, but Christian Izien laid a perfect hit right on the ball, and Jacob Parrish recovered.
The Buccaneers have a +10 turnover margin this season, tied for third-best in the NFL.
A big blow for Tampa Bay. His replacement, Jacob Parrish, is having a tough night.
Sills got behind Jamel Dean and might have had a touchdown, but he had it go right through his hands.
The Falcons keep giving the Buccaneers opportunities, and Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay keep taking advantage. This time, Dee Alford committed illegal contact on a third-and-goal from the 13, Divine Deablo got a tripping penalty on the next play, and then Mayfield found Devin Culp for the score.
A third-string running back scored Tampa Bay's first touchdown. Now a third-string tight end has its second.
A 45-yard catch in his first game since Week 7. Just goes up and over Cobee Bryant and shows tremendous concentration and hand-eye coordination to catch the bobble.
This was very well-defended by Bryant. It didn't matter.
So this is what the Falcons were envisioning when they drafted Kyle Pitts fourth overall. He has six catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns already!
Pitts had a 36-yard catch on the play prior, too. He's too fast for safeties, too big for cornerbacks. The hosts have no answers.
Mike Evans tried to go up high on a Baker Mayfield throw, but Cobee Bryant came through and crumpled him to the ground. Evans is in some pain on the sideline.
Bijan Robinson broke off a big run, but it's coming back thanks to a hold by Dylan Drummond, one that was completely unnecessary.
The Falcons are already up to eight penalties.
... and they've been costly. A third-down defensive holding gave Tampa Bay a first down. Another penalty was declined because Emeka Egbuka caught a 23-yard pass anyway. This latest penalty negated a sack that would have resulted in a third down.
The Falcons appeared to have to settle for a short field goal, but Zyon McCollum was offside on the attempt, giving Atlanta a first down. Kirk Cousins took immediate advantage, finding Kyle Pitts for an 8-yard score.
Good work from Cousins here standing tall and getting through his progressions.
Both scoring drives have been extended due to penalty A.J. Terrell's third-down penalty extended the Buccaneers drive that resulted in a touchdown. Now, the Falcons are getting some penalty luck of their own. Overall, there have been seven accepted penalties between the two teams.
He's struggling with a right ankle injury.
Two-headed monster? How about three? With Bucky Irving and Rachaad White already making their mark, it's Sean Tucker who finishes off the Buccaneers' second offensive drive with a touchdown.
The play came two snaps after Jalen McMillan caught a 19-yard pass down to the 1-yard line. It was McMillan's first catch of the year; he suffered a severe neck strain in the preseason and was in a brace for several months. Though his return isn't as hyped as Evans', he could play a big role as a slot or outside target.
A 12-yard gain and a first down on his first catch since Week 3
Mike Hughes is headed to the sideline after a long Rachaad White run, walking a bit gingerly.
Both teams reached roughly midfield before stalling out. There's been a heavy run emphasis for Atlanta -- not a surprise given they have Bijan Robinson and are down Michael Penix and Drake London -- while Bucky Irving was responsible for all of the Buccaneers' yards on the first drive.
Jamel Dean made a hard hit on Kyle Pitts, and appeared to be favoring his shoulder.
The Buccaneers start with the ball, and Bucky Irving rips off a nice chunk gain for a first down.
Baker Mayfield came out of the gates like an MVP candidate, but he has struggled since. With Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan back in the fold, can he turn things around over the final month of the season?
Baker Mayfield this season | Weeks 1-6 | Weeks 7-14 |
W-L | 5-1 | 2-5 |
TD-Int | 12-1 | 8-5 |
Yards per attempt | 7.9 | 5.3 |
Rush YPG | 26.3 | 18.1 |
Remember, Mayfield did injure his shoulder in Week 7 against the Lions; he did not have a single rush attempt in that game or the next two. But he has been running more of late.
Baker Mayfield will have all of his wide receivers for the first time this year, but he will be down his tight end: Cade Otton, who was doubtful due to a knee injury, is indeed out. Same for Tykee Smith (neck/shoulder).
Drake London, who has not played since Week 11 due to a knee injury, remains out for Atlanta, as was previously announced.
But the Falcons did get good news: All of their players listed as questionable (Kyle Pitts, Jalon Walker, Brandon Dorlus and David Onyemata) are active.
The Buccaneers are in their Creamsicles, while the Falcons are donning their throwback red helmet/black jersey combo. That makes it a rare NFL game in which neither team wears white.
