The Chargers announced plans to cut ties with K Nate Kaeding on Monday. Kaeding (groin) was placed on the reserve/injured list and will be released as soon as he is healthy.
San Diego also signed WR Danario Alexander who will take Kaeding’s spot on the 53-man roster.
Kaeding, a nine-year veteran, was selected by the Chargers in the third round of the 2004 draft. Kaeding was 7 for 7 this season before injuring his groin in preparations for the Chargers game vs. the Chiefs in Week 4. He has made 180 of 207 for a career accuracy rate of .869, an NFL record.
K Nick Novak, a five-year veteran, will continue to kick for the Chargers. Novak has made five of six field goals since he was signed in Week 4. His only miss was from 55 yards against the Saints in Week 5.
Novak also kicked in 15 games for the Chargers last season in place of Kaeding (ACL) and made 27 of 34 field goals attempted. In the process, he set the franchise record for 11 field goals from 40 yards or longer in a season.
Novak is 32 of 40 (.80 accuracy rate) on field goals attempted for the Chargers. He has not always been so accurate. Novak has made just 51 of 70 (72.9 accuracy rate) attempted in his career.
Alexander, 6-5, 240, has caught 46 passes for 737 yards (16 yard average) and three TDs through his first two seasons in the league (2010-11) with the Rams. Alexander, however, has been plagued with knee injuries and has only played in 18 games. Alexander has not played in a game this season.
